Modern Salon - October 2007 - (Page 36) NEW•NOW•NEXT DESTINATIONS Historic Apple The smoking-hot category of hair extensions and replacements just gets better and better, with salons raking in the bucks both from service and system sales. What’s the word for 2007? We asked three people who know: Brett Butcher, the national program director for Great Lengths USA, whose extensions are worn everyplace from the red carpet to the boardroom; Shevy, the founder of Shevy Pro, a line of luxury wigs; and Jessica Hyllaree, CEO of New York Clip-On Hair Extensions, custom-blended human hair pieces.—EY Fair Hair TRENDS WHAT’S NEW? Butcher: The “Great Lengths Multi-Strand Hair Transfer,” launching in early 2008, allows the certified stylist to apply five bonds simultaneously, reducing the traditional three- to fivehour service to one to two while producing the same highquality result. Shevy: Our redesigned handmade net. With our lace-front hairline and multi-directional French part, the wigs become simply undetectable. Hyllaree: Our extensions are hand-sewn to match each client’s hair color, with three colors selected on the color ring—one for the base, one for highlights and one for lowlights. WHAT’S NOW? WHAT’S NEXT? Butcher: More and more manufacturers getting into the category is great, [but] we’re seeing less education requirements, which could potentially take the category back 10 years when there was a general stigma to extension services as being damaging to the client’s natural hair. Salons must align themselves with manufacturers that understand that required professional education is the most important element in [their] success. Offering an impressive line-up of fashion and education, the Global Beauty Show, set for October 7-8 at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City will feature top talent, including guest artists Tom Dispenza, Bennie Pollard, Mike Karg and Toni Love. If you plan to stay on after the show, take in some local history in the form of some great American architecture. Situated within the city parks of New York City’s five boroughs—Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, The Bronx, and Staten Island—stand 22 historic houses, ranging from “modest farmers’ cottages to grand mansions” that reflect New York City’s 350year past. For an on-line description and photos of the homes, as well as tour information, go to www.historichousetrust. com. The historic district in Midtown features 12 buildings designed in early Tudor style. For a complete listing and description of 26 walking tours—both private and public—go to www.nycwalk. com. Built in 1748, the colonial plantationstyle Van Cortlandt House was the first historic house to become a museum. Learn more at www.vancortlandthouse.com . . . . The oldest operating hotel in New York City, the Algonquin at 59 W. 44th Street, opened its doors in 1902. Read the background of the 105 year-old building on the website www.algonquinhotel.com. —Arlene Tolin Modern wigs offer a great alternative, says Shevy. Butcher: Our best-selling length is 18 inches. Two colors that share the highest sales are Great Lengths #3, a dark warm brown and #10, a warm creamy blonde. Recently introduced ash tones in both brunette and blonde are rapidly gaining. Shevy: Our best-selling look for the fall is the super-chic bob with full bangs and faceframing layers in the Victoria Beckham style. Hyllaree: Ninety percent order the straight hair—it gives the client more options. Our most popular color is medium brown; we call it cocoa. Jessica Hyllaree cites the conveniences of clip-ons. Shevy: High quality and comfort of wigs and hairpieces. Hyllaree: Clip-ons are becoming more and more popular. It’s just like putting in a barrette! Great Lengths’ Butcher says extentions will be even better. 36 OCTOBER 2007 www.modernsalon.com http://www.vancortlandthouse.com http://www.algonquinhotel.com http://www.modernsalon.com
