NEW•NOW•NEXT DO IT BETTER Brilliant Bobs Trendy clients are as busy as anyone else, so when they want one of today’s sizzling short-shorts, reach for your clippers. Depending on the hair’s current length, you’ll be able to cut the basic shape in as few as seven minutes, then spend extra time on detailing and showing off styling options. Here’s how: 1. If you’re starting with short hair, dry cut it; for midlength hair, dampen it and use a standard clipper blade. Establish the exterior frame and the length first. 2. Part off the entire nape and cut it to the new short length. Cut against your finger or a comb. Drop down subsequent sections and cut them to the guide. Or, for head-hugging layers, pull large horizontal sections toward you until the previously cut nape starts to drop out. Cut the sections underneath, then on top, at a 45-degree angle. Angle the clipper for an increase or decrease. 4. Now, detail the cut by adding interior texture, buzzing the underlayers or razoring the ends. Colorist Melissa Schriber says, “Darken areas that are near fuller features like a larger forehead or cheeks, and lighten pieces around areas that you want to draw attention to like beautiful cheeks bones, eyes or a nice collar bone. “You’re basically balancing the face shape. For instance, someone with a pear-shaped face who complains of chubby cheeks should have darker color placed by the jaw line and brighter pieces in the fringe and top to draw attention away from the jaw.” Elan Latham, who specializes in cutting, recommends sculpting hair with a draping method that follows the natural fall and using elongated vertical texturizing.“Cuts that have vertical movement create a slimmer look, especially as it relates to the neck, shoulder and face area,” he explains.
