The profession is as, or more, challenging than many others, and the first people we have to convince are ourselves. “We have to stop trivializing ourselves and stop making our work seem or sound less important than it is,” she says. “Never say you are just a hairdresser, or just a hair colorist. “You are a professional cosmetologist. And part shrink, part interior designer, part coach, part many things that no one else could pull off,” she adds. “What we do for a living is difficult physically, emotionally and mentally.” An important step to take to build confidence is talking to colleagues and clients with care, precision and pride. “Forbidden phrases in my salon are, ‘We’re playing with it.’ ‘It’s just a single.’ ‘I’m squeezing somebody in,’” she says. “Squeezing someone in at 9:30 means the 9 and the 10 hate your guts.
