Victoria Wurdinger learns what’s different about bobs this time around and uncovers who’ll love short-shorts most. I t wasn’t Ellen Barkin, Selma Blair or even Victoria Beckham, whose Spice Girl nickname got her new cut dubbed the “Pob” (Posh + bob). Instead, it was new mom Katie Holmes who put everyone on the short circuit. Observers argue whether it was Holmes’ dramatic length loss, her fresh-scrubbed youth or her super-visibility as a star spouse that made short cuts jump mainstream. Daniel Holzberger, creative director at the Van Michael salons in Atlanta, doesn’t care: He’s just happy that nearly 70 percent of his clients are talking about getting a new, shorter look. And he’s prepared to help them make the move, thanks to the salon’s “customer standards.” “Every stylist is required to have a look book, preferably of cuts and color they’ve done themselves,” explains Holzberger. “The portfolio can also contain general fashion photos of looks they like; this helps match clients to stylists.” If you aren’t similarly prepared for a slew of fall cut requests, better get a short-story book in the works. Internet beauty chat rooms are buzzing with “best bob for me” conversations and questions, and Holzberger says without photos, you and your client will be lost. “Bob” means 10 different things to 10 different people.
