For them, you can make ultra-short cuts more feminine by leaving long sideburns that bring out the cheekbones and uplift the face, or by creating a soft neckline.” While almost everyone’s a candidate for short, don’t talk a client into it unless she’s really ready. As excited as you might be about finally getting to cut that 40-year-old’s waist-length hair, if she leaves unhappy, you’ve set yourself up for failure. Just don’t let that thought prevent you from making the suggestion. “If you don’t change your client’s look, someone else will,” stresses Weintraub. “However, clients want to participate in decisions. Asking creative, openended questions is the best way to establish a dialogue that leads to change.” For example, ask “If I gave you the scissors, what part of your hair would you cut off right now?” Some clients will say their bangs bug them, others will mention the back. Let the answer be your guide. Perhaps the best thing about the new shorts is that they go hand in hand with fabulous hair color.
