To get the size right, try on shoes in late afternoon when your feet are swollen. Make certain the shoes offer good arch support—they shouldn’t have a big “cut-out” at the bottom. Any shoe you wear while standing for long periods should have a space the equivalent of the width of your thumb between your big toe and the end of the shoe. If one foot is bigger than the other, which is often the case, buy for the bigger foot. If you want to wear pointed toes, get them longer than normal, so the widest part of the shoe is at the ball of the foot. (You should always be able to wiggle your toes some.) Finally, when you stand, your toes are supposed to splay to bear weight. This can’t happen in a pointed-toe shoe, which sends the weight to the lower back, initiating problems there.
