Modern Salon - November 2008 - (Page 40) NEW•NOW•NEXT MARKET PLACE ABS UPDATE BEYOND SAMPLING With an overwhelming number of cosmetics in the marketplace and high price tags on many, Springwise.com reports that wary customers are demanding freebies in a trend it calls “tryvertising.” “Sampling salons” in Tokyo allow customers to try make-up and skin care products pressure-free—the brands don’t even sell in the sampling locations but in traditional stores or online. Now, the trend has spread to the UK, where Latest in Beauty uses a questionnaire to guide consumers to website selections that match their profiles. Browsers get up to three free cosmetic samples a month, and later provide feedback. What’s missing, however, is strong sell-through. Says Mary Miller, a make-up artist and co-owner of David and Mary Salon and Spa in Carmel, Indiana, “A traditional sample size is too small for anyone to determine if she likes it, and samples don’t allow consumers to use the item with its companion products.
