In addition to pain-relieving crystals for foot baths, wine-scented pedi-lotion and bamboo scrubs to increase leg circulation, new light-pulsing technology with infrared appears in hand and foot units to help increase circulation, reduce swelling and break down the pigment in age spots. Plus, given the need to double up services, nail stations of the future look like they’re going totally mobile. 2. Better Reception Health, wellness and anti-aging came together last year in beverages that provided a super boost of anti-oxidants. Now, antioxidant infused bars and snacks are the thing to serve in your reception area. A few include organic nutrition bars and Farmacy bars, which tap the “food as medicine” trend. There are even coffee bars and organic chocolates that are 74-percent dark chocolate, in keeping with research on the cocoa bean’s health and mood benefits. They’re all alternatives to nutraceutical liquids. The thinking: Consumers will consider the benefits more substantial and purchase them to take home. 3. Boosted Backbars Hair and scalp treatments are going high-tech or ultra-natural. Laser therapy to inhibit hair loss comes in hand-held versions and includes hair care. Other scalp treatments rely on ingredients like essential oils, bee propolis or therapeutic muds. Many are three-step systems (Bain de Terre’s starts with a Sugar & Fig Scalp Massage Scrub), and the focus is on purification as much as it is on scalp stimulation. Even shampoo bowls are more sanitary and safer: New neck rests invented by a chiropractor feature rubber that won’t hold bacteria and are shaped for maximum comfort without risking neck compression. Rounding things out, clients’ heads can now be wrapped in high-absorption towels containing nano-silver, which has antibacterial properties. 4. Cosmetics Counter Intelligence know cosmetics are integral to the package. Many today compact as many products as possible in a purse-sized bundle. Even if you don’t have a full-fledged make-up counter, mineral cosmetics like Jane Iredale let you offer it all with fewer SKUs. If you don’t want to invest time, space and money in semipermanent eyelashes, retail substitutes fill the void with a lash conditioner that goes on like eyeliner to help what’s natural grow (Revitalash), and a lash extender that uses tiny fibers and a special brush to elongate and strengthen between mascara applications. Add lip-plumping glosses, skin-lifting concealers and sun-blocking foundations, and there’s hardly a cosmetic on the market that doesn’t have a dual purpose. 5. Sun Smarts Hairdressers who act as style consultants Unlike most countries, the U.S. rates sunscreens solely on the level of UVB protection, yet UVA rays are the major cause of premature aging and are strongly linked to melanoma. The FDA is currently considering adopting an internationally recognized rating system for UVA protection, but passage of a new monograph is uncertain. It was a hot topic among physicians at the show. Dr. Karl Gruber, a surgical pathologist and co-founder of LUCA, the first sunscreen to tout maximum UVA and UVB protection says, “I’ve seen women in their 20s and 30s with skin cancers, which was unheard of a decade ago. Part of the reason is the shift to active lifestyles. Sunscreen is as important in winter as it is in summer.” Physicians say no beauty regimen should be without sun-protection products. In fact, stocking them might allow you to tap another trend—simplified regimens. Dr. Scott Gerrish, medical director of Gerrish & Associates in Washington D.C., who supports a new FDA monograph and was at the show to explain the Fraxel laser system noted, “Most of these exhibitors wouldn’t be at this show if everyone correctly used sunscreen that offered broad-spectrum sun protection.” While it may never replace a good moisturizer, an optimally rated, full-spectrum sunscreen just might make a slew of lighteners, brighteners and plumpers a thing of the past.
