FAROUK www.farouk.com After the devastation Hurricane Ike brought to Houston and Galveston, Farouk Shami, Rami Shami and Shauky Gulamani came together and stepped up to the plate and donated to several organizations in Houston and Louisiana. In addition, they realized that Farouk Systems has three warehouses and a corporate office filled with victims who endured devastation during this tragedy—so they gave a care pack to each employee to help in this time of need. During the Austin show, Farouk met a hairdresser from Galveston who lost everything, so he sent her pallets of products to provide her with a new beginning. Then, the company found out Galveston was still desperate for hygiene products. Farouk Systems is donating 20 pallets of products to be distributed throughout each of the Galveston counties. “Our blessings come when we do our part to bless others,” says Farouk. Aveda’s holiday program returns to Nepal this year to offer the opportunity to give gifts that make a difference. The 2008 Holiday Collection shares the beauty of well-being and celebrates the 500 year-old craft of Nepalese papermaking. Each set is adorned with Lokta paper handcrafted by men and women in Malika and Dalika—two rural regions in the Himalayas. Aveda’s partnership with these Nepalese communities helps keep families together and reverse local deforestation. Aveda began partnering with communities in Nepal in 2002 and continues to strengthen and expand the benefit-sharing relationship. This year, Aveda increased its paper purchase from Nepal by 82 percent. The increase further supports the communities of Malika and Dalika in their efforts to develop a sustainable local business, fostering economic independence through the employment of 1,282 people. The increased income allows children of 500 families to attend school. Nepal’s Lokta paper is Forest Stewardship Council-certified; meaning Aveda’s paper purchase helps preserve 90,000 acres of Himalayan forest. “The 2008 Holiday Gift Collection enables the Aveda guest to support the culture, craftsmanship and communities of Nepal,” says Dominique Conseil, president of Aveda. “The purchase of each gift box supports the development of a sustainable business and the preservation of native forests.” HAIRUWEAR www.hairuwear.com As part of its ongoing commitment to the cause, HairUWear provides thousands of wigs annually for women who are suffering from cancer. For the fifth year, HairUWear will donate approximately $1 million worth of Raquel Welch Signature Wigs to American Cancer Society. Right now, thousands of Raquel Welch wigs, in a variety of different shades and styles, are finding their way into the lives of women across the country suffering from cancer-related hair loss. The wigs are distributed to cancer patients nationwide, via wig banks operated by American Cancer Society. “It’s easy to feel powerless in the face of cancer, but even small gestures can make a big difference,” says Raquel Welch. “Three years ago, my cousin asked me to recommend a wig style for her after Raquel Welch being diagnosed with cancer. Of course, I was happy to help, and seeing the impact of something so seemingly simple inspired me to do the same for thousands of other women.” “We cannot thank Raquel Welch enough for her generous donation,” says a representative of American Cancer Society. “After last year’s donation, we received countless letters of thanks, which we forwarded to Raquel.
