Salon Today - January 2009 - (Page 10) ADVERTISEMENT [EDITOR’S NOTE] Dear Professional, Like many of you, I’m ready for the fresh start that a new year always brings. But before diving into 2009, it may be helpful to look back at what worked, career- and business-wise in the previous year, and what could use a little revision. The Professional Beauty Association is a valuable resource for salons, spas, distributors and manufacturers interested in looking at new business tools and exploring educational and networking opportunities available in the upcoming year. It is no secret that 2008 presented some tough economic challenges, but we are lucky. We’re members of an exceptionally recession-proof business, and I am confident that our professional beauty industry will continue to prosper. In 2006, the salon industry recorded sales of over $37.5 billion.* You can achieve your piece of that pie and boost earning potential in 2009 by continuing to invest in your education and career. I invite you to take the first step by attending the International Salon and Spa Expo 2009. International Salon and Spa Expo (ISSE) January 31–February 2, 2009 · Long Beach, CA The biggest beauty show on the West Coast, ISSE 2009 showcases the latest trends and products to help you build your business, and this year features an exciting lineup of contests, educators and exhibitors! If you buy your tickets online at probeauty.org/isse you’ll be entered to win a once-in-a-lifetime chance to participate in a hair and fashion photo shoot with PBA. At this year’s ISSE, world-class artists and educators will demonstrate their talents on the stages of the International Fashion Theater, Technical Theater, and Latino Fashion Theater, and you’ll find complimentary courses in hair, nails, skin and business. Don’t miss performances by Kim V, Orlando Pita & T3 Micro, Karg + Blackwell, Charlie Price, the Rusk Artistic Team, Sassoon Academy and Yosh. At the ISSE, licensed massage therapists can get CE credits at the brand-new Wellness Education. Some of our exhibitors will be hosting performances and educational demonstrations on the show floor, including Sally Beauty Supply, BSG, Rusk, TIGI, Dermalogica, OPI, Matrix, Creative Nail, Belvedere and hundreds more. A full list of exhibitors and educational opportunities is available on the ISSE website. The ISSE is committed to creating a professional environment and offering attendees valuable educational opportunities, as well as a chance to meet quality manufacturers and learn more about their products. I hope you have a chance to put yourself, your business, and your education first this January, even if you can’t make it to Long Beach to see us. Wishing you a wonderful and profitable 2009 from the Professional Beauty Association! The Audacity of Growth W Today’s focus shifts to the long-distance runners—the sustainable businesses that post steady growth over time. When current Associate Publisher and former SALON TODAY Editor-in-Chief Michele Musgrove first discussed the concept of honoring the fastest-growing salons in North America, industry naysayers told her it couldn’t be done. “You’ll never get 200 salon owners to share their sales figures, let alone back up that information with two years of tax returns,” they laughed. It’s a good thing she didn’t listen—she asked and you answered. In January 1996, we published the first SALON TODAY 200 list of fastest-growing salons. The sales figures, the business statistics, and the essays outlining best practice ideas shared by owners were and remain invaluable. “Because each owner who has ever completed a SALON TODAY 200 application has been incredibly generous with information and ideas, we were able to develop some of the first benchmarks for salon business—helping to raise the bar for the entire industry,” Musgrove says. Eyes on the Marathoners Chair of PBA Governing Council The Professional Beauty Association (PBA) is made up of salons and spas, distributors and manufacturers dedicated to improving their individual businesses and the industry as a whole. Led by industry volunteers, PBA offers: business tools · education · government advocacy · networking and more. In 1996, fast growth was the business buzz phrase. Technology was reshaping every industry, business was booming, and companies measured their success by their growth rates. In short, the world was focused on the sprinters. Within our industry, salon owners, hungry for business tools and ideas, had started gathering for The Salon Association’s first Symposium events—swapping best business practices instead of artistic hair trends. In today’s economic reality, the focus now shifts to the long-distance runners—the sustainable businesses that post steady growth over time. While growth remains an indicator of success, businesses are realizing it’s not the only way to measure success. This global shift is causing us to reevaluate SALON TODAY 200, looking at ways we can recognize and honor salons for their best practices, in addition to their growth. Admittedly, it’s a work in progress, and we invite you to help us reshape it. For more information, see “A Time for Change” on page 72. For those who study the statistics in ST200, you may notice a subtle change. For the first time, we chose not to publish the salons’ sales forecasts. While most still expect sales increases for 2008 over 2007, when polled recently, many admitted that the forecasts they made when filling out the applications in late summer were optimistic in light of the Fall’s economic problems. Wishing each of you health, happiness and sustainability for 2009.
