Salon Today - May 2008 - (Page 28) [INSIDE LOOK] Rave Reviews From employees to community members, this salon hits all the right notes. by Melissa Segars Hill to run a profitable business that people enjoy working at. Employees know what is going on and what to expect. That comes from having policies and procedures in effect. Q. How are you involved in the community? A. STRAFF: Over the last year, we’ve participated in “Locks for Love” and an event called “Cuts for a Cause” to benefit an Alzheimer’s benefit. Any community group that asks for something, we give it to them, whether hair products or gift certificates. One of the other things we do is mentor people in the community who are starting up businesses; helping them put together a business plan, financing, hooking them up with the right people. I love watching people become successful in their own right and helping to contribute back. I believe “what goes around, comes around.” Q. ROGGIO: We’re all thankful for what we have, so if we can help anybody in any small way, we do. Creating a partnership in the community is a big factor for us. From “can you donate to my charity?” to “can you help me start a business?” Q. What sets your salon apart from others in your area? A. STRAFF: When I opened nine years ago, we started the process where any client can feel comfortable going to anyone in the salon. Stylists don’t take ownership of a client. There have been 23 babies born to stylists in nine years. They go on maternity leave, and their clients feel very comfortable going to see anyone. Q. ROGGIO: It’s a relaxed but upscale environment. Clients know so many of the stylists that when they walk in four hairdressers will say hello to them by first name. Q. What kind of education do you provide for staff ? A. STRAFF: We’re always looking for different kinds of education, including life skills. We have brought in financial advisors and a mortgage consultant. We want them all to be successful and have houses and cars. I’ve also gone through budget sheets oneon-one with staff. Q. ROGGIO: They don’t always have a lot of that type of education and they’re very young when they start in the industry. We want to do what we can to help. They have been receptive. The impact is not always right away, but it helps a few years down the line. When they need it, they have the resources available. n Donna Straff Salon Rage Southampton, Pennsylvania Despite the name, there is nothing angry about Salon Rage—it actually stands for Right Attitude, Great Expectations. In their nine years in business, that slogan is something owner Donna Straff and her staff have strived to live up to every day. Straff, and sister-inlaw and director of operations for the salon, Jill Roggio, talk about what goes into making the salon a success. Q. Why did you open Salon Rage? A. STRAFF: I wanted to create a business that matches my core values. As you become successful in the industry, you take a little from each place you work that you like and you don’t like, then try to make your salon the best that you can. One important thing is having structure in place. We make sure compensation is given fairly with goals in mind. Everyone is given the tools to reach the next level, so everyone has the same opportunity. Q. ROGGIO: We have a commission system with levels in place so there will never be anyone without another level to strive for.
