Although you might be able to give clients a similar Bardot-esque blowout at the salon, their hair will usually fall ﬂat (in no time ﬂat) when they step into the summer heat and humidity. Nicole Welty, a stylist from Patrick Mcivor’s Studio Two salon in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, has a few tips to help you give clients a voluptuous mane with staying power. “The best way to create long-lasting volume is to start at the root of the hair shaft and build a foundation for the look,” Welty says. She does this by applying volumizing spray foam about 1/4-inch from the scalp. Welty recommends Redken guts 10 volume spray foam or PureOlogy RootLift. She then uses a lightweight smoother and thermal protector on the ends to keep hair shiny and smooth. Rather than blow drying the client with her head ﬂipped over, have her sit up. Hold her hair vertically upright and direct the blow dryer heat to her roots. Use a nozzle attachment to maximize the heat concentration. “You must also over-direct the hair in the top sections to help build up the roots for maximum volume,” Welty says. Once the roots are dry, you’ve created the perfect foundation to pump up the volume. From there, use a medium-sized brush to dry and finish the ends. Voila! Long-lasting volume!
