Think nightclub— not Club Med. “I saw a shift in the spa environment from being very calming and relaxing to a focus on regeneration,” Wagner says. “We think that feeling of inspiration doesn’t come from quiet music, sage green and burning candles, but RJuut Salonspa Location: Edina, Minnesota Opened: September 17, 2007 Owner: David Wagner Website: www.juut.com Salon style: Urban, sleek Square footage: 7,871 Styling stations: 38 Treatment rooms: 5 Equipment: Takara Belmont, plus custom shampoo beds/bowls Furniture: Etopa, custom Top retail line: Aveda Design: Trellage-Ferrill Architect: Trellage-Ferrill Judges’ comments: “This is a fun, dynamic, brilliant space.” —Prais “From the oversize windows, to the front door pull, to the creative light panels at the reception desk, this salon puts its best foot forward.” —Soble from stimulating design and sound.” Enter Wagner’s 10th Juut location. The name comes from the Japanese word “Juuten,” which means to refill—specifically to uplift humanity and serve others, according to Wagner. The 8,000 square-foot glass sanctuary is anchored by a central atrium; a 70-foot glass elevator that connects the two floors. The space was designed to be a fluid hub of creativity that allows energy to flow freely. In its past life, Juut was a restaurant and nightclub, which inspired Wagner’s design. “I wanted it to feel very spacious, similar to a W Hotel,” Wagner explains. That contemporary feeling of cool can be felt throughout the space. Whitewashed walls are covered in pulverized quartz meditation crystals and decorated with vibrant displays of red, green and white blown glass. White cushioned benches line the salon floor where clients can lounge as they process beneath abstract orchid paintings done in bold colors. Sound is another way that Wagner managed to make the salon/spa feel more dynamic. Taking This is truly what’s next in beauty not only for Juut and the Twin cities, but for the entire industry. —David Wagner 28 | June 2008 www.salontoday.com http://www.juut.com http://www.salontoday.com
