Salon Today - June 2008 - (Page 29) When asked how he gave the larger-thanlife salon/spa a feeling of intimacy, Wagner simply says that he didn’t. Again, going against the pristine grain of conventional spas, he wanted clients to feel free to roam throughout Juut without feeling as though they needed to check in or were under a microscope. But for clients who do want to feel engaged between services, there’s a place just for them— the six-seat beauty bar. Wagner says he took a cue from Apple’s “genius bar” in creating this interactive demonstration kiosk. Juut beauty specialists are behind the counter to help guests research different treatments, experiment with new hair styles or try out a set of Bambi-ish false eyelashes, for example. “It’s almost like sitting at a black jack table,” Wagner says. “People feel very comfortable just walking up and joining.” Business-wise, the beauty bar also helps boost product sales, since it’s a seamless part of the retail area. As Wagner points out, curious clients can experiment with new products and services, get a “prescription” from the associate behind the counter and have it filled on the spot by a salesperson. He predicts that this is only the beginning for interactivity in salons. “This is truly what’s next in beauty,” Wagner says. “Not only for Juut and the Twin cities, but for the entire industry.” n a cue from big-city celebrity hotspots, he installed a nightclub-caliber sound system and added three big-screen plasma TVs. “People are loving it,” Wagner says. “One woman said she wanted to drink a cosmo, not chamomile tea. This is like going to New York—that’s the vibe.” But Edina, Minnesota, is a world apart from the Big Apple. Juut sits among P.F. Chang’s and The Cheesecake Factory at an outdoor shopping center, so Wagner had to think of a grand exterior statement to make the place pop. The solution? A two-story “billboard” right on the window front that features a Juut-styled model. The image is only visible from the outside—guests within the building can see clearly through the windows because of the graphic’s translucent material. Wagner plans to change the image twice a year. Juut forgoes the traditional earth tones for bright white with vivid blasts of red, green and white glass. WEB WATCH Want to see more photos of our winning salons?
