Salon Today - June 2008 - (Page 56) [OWNER TO OWNER] Shawna Cruise The Loft Hair Design Escondido, California I KNEW I WANTED TO BE A STYLIST: When I was 12, my mom was my first client after she got tired of cutting her own hair. Five years later, I graduated from cosmetology school and fell in love with the industry. MY FIRST JOB IN THE INDUSTRY: Was working for a quick- service salon. Looking back, it took me 10 years to learn what my assistants learn in the first couple years. BEFORE I OWNED MY SALON: I thought I was a born leader. Now I know that leadership is a learned skill. I INSPIRE MY CLIENTS BY: Taking risks. So many people live where they are comfortable and never venture outside of that. I believe that anything is possible and live my life accordingly. MY CLIENTS LOVE MY SALON BECAUSE: They believe that our suburban city deserves a sophisticated, metropolitan experience. THE BEST DECOR INVESTMENT I MADE WAS: The redesign of our front end. Using merchandising schematics, we simplified and expanded all of our retail shelving, improved traffic flow and dramatically reduced the size of our front desk. MY BIGGEST DECOR DISASTER WAS: The amount of money that I initially spent on minor things like toilet-paper hangers and coat hooks. I obsessed over the details, but after a few years, I realized that those things weren’t very important. I could have used that money on something that really mattered to the bottom line, like a washer and dryer. MY INDUSTRY HERO IS: As a colorist, Beth Minardi has been my hero for 15 years. As a business woman, Eveline Charles. “I thought I was a born leader. Now I know that leadership is a learned skill.” BEAUTIFUL HAIR IS: Sexy, confident, and most importantly, enhances the person who’s wearing it. MY FAVORITE TIME IN THE SALON IS: When the happy chatter of clients and busy stylists drown out any gripes. I LOVE WHAT I DO BECAUSE: My heart loves making a difference in people’s lives and my head loves the challenge. 56 | June 2008 www.salontoday.com http://www.salontoday.com
