Salon Today - June 2008 - (Page 8) [EDITOR’S NOTE] A Beautiful Business When analyzing your salon, don’t forget to look on the surface before delving into deeper issues. A As a salon or spa owner, you spend a lot of time thinking about beauty. How do your clients’ cuts and color look? How is your staff dressed? Are you keeping your own style up to date? Hair, make-up, fashion, nails—these are the things you and your staff are paid to pay attention to. But at the end of the day, the first impression you make on clients and potential new staff members is what they see when they walk in your salon’s front door. Whether you’re opening a new salon or remodeling an existing location, the question is: “Where do I begin?” Decor Dilemmas Choosing your salon’s decor can be daunting. Whether you’re opening a new salon or remodeling an existing location, the question is: “Where do I begin?” Think about your salon’s culture, the type of stylists who work for you, the physical location of your business, the clientele you attract, what your competitors’ salons look like. All of these things will factor into your decision. But ultimately, it’s up to you. The owner of our second-place winner, Sine Qua Non likes pink and had no qualms about splashing it all over her Chicago salon. “I’m not afraid of color,” said owner Laura Boton. “It’s part of my personal aesthetic and the salon had to reflect me. If you do it right, you don’t have to be afraid.” Our grand-prize winner, owner of Juut Salons, David Wagner, has a similar thought process behind his winning design. “We think that feeling of inspiration doesn’t come from quiet music, sage green and burning candles, but from stimulating design and sound,” he said of his controversial decision to veer away from traditional spa decor to create a more energetic environment. Whatever you choose to do in your own salon, remember, this is your space—don’t be afraid to put your signature style stamp on it.
