Salon Today - July 2008 - (Page 18) [FASHION SENSE] Red Alert V Veteran stylist Bennie Pollard (and his cheekily named Team BennieFactor) sounded a siren call with the launch of his Redtropolis collection. Pollard looked to science fiction as his inspiration for the comic book-worthy looks. He used both straight and round lines to produce contrasting soft and abrupt silhouettes. All turned heads, including a crimson pixie cut, pompadour-esque amber ringlets and shouldersweeping blonde locks with bold, red highlights. Pollard used techniques from his Sure Thing training program, which features weave cutting to release the weight from curly hair; clipper finishing to polish strong lines; and the “Knucklebuster” for close, modern crops. Stylists can hone these methods at BennieFactor’s Know How Center for Creative Development. “To really capture my vision, I designed the clothing myself,” Pollard explains. “The wardrobe ties together with the hair and make-up to create an atmosphere of true anticipation for what the future holds.” Have any of your clients gone blonde-orexic? Or perhaps their signature chestnut shade is drawing yawns? Show them how versatile and sexy red can be. Encourage them to experiment with a fresh cut and an unexpected ruby hue. For more information on BennieFactor’s training programs, or to sign up for a class, call 866-227-4448, visit www.benniefactor.com, or e-mail info@benniefactor.com. Teach them to replicate your technique at home and they’ll be forever faithful. Xena Parsons, owner of Xena’s Beauty Company in New York, has taken that one-on-one tutorial a step further and it’s paying off in a big way. Parsons offers monthly workshops that teach clients to blow dry and style their hair. She credits Amy Swainey of Shine Salon in North Carolina for giving her the idea. The workshops at Xena’s are branded “Glamour Blow-Out 101.” For $40 per guest, her staff demonstrates the right products, tools and techniques for the perfect blow dry. Parsons tells us that the event has been a great success and the salon has just booked its first corporate client. Why not try it in your own salon? Not only will it bring in a bevy of clients (old and new) who are eager to learn insider tips, it can also translate into higher retail sales and glowing referrals. BLOWOUTS CAPE MOD CLIENTS ARE STROLLING INTO your salon in search of a hip, new look, so why cloak them in a stodgy (or worse—stained) cape while they’re in your chair? Check out the new André Posy Hairstyling Cape by Fromm International. The capes, available in black or chocolate brown, are bedecked with a whimsical posy trim. They’re pretty and practical: The fabric is Teflon-treated to resist water, stains and wrinkles.
