Salon Today - July 2008 - (Page 41) Timeline of Issues A selection of SALON TODAY’s major issue themes that appeared in the past 15 years mirrors the industry progress during that period: >Signs of the Times Like any dynamic publication, SALON TODAY stands always prepared to react to current events. After 9/11, we shared our readers’ stories of tragedy and amazing community outreach efforts, addressed new security concerns and then, together, regrouped to forge ahead and determine clients’ new needs upon their collective loss of innocence. In lighter times, we published what became a huge favorite: the February 2005 issue that explored hairdressers’ increasing “star power” and landed Bravo TV “Blow Out” star Jonathan Antin on the cover. In the most recent years, the rapid evolution of both spa and technology have kept us on our toes. With an annual issue devoted to each, readers have stayed informed about the latest developments that have swept salons into the simultaneously high-tech and high-touch 21st century. It was only a decade ago that our “Salon Automation Issue” introduced the revolutionary concept that every salon should implement a comprehensive business software system. Since then SALON TODAY has periodically included a software directory as we’ve reported on the latest in phone systems, chronicled the salon debut of pre-Blackberry Palm Pilots, viewed the in-salon installation of screens large and small and described the latest product and equipment advances. Treading salon’s new spa ground, our March 2000 “Strengthen Your Spa” issue sought to help spas solve their tenuous profitability equation by expanding retail, tightening overhead and payroll and generating sales of gift cards, still called gift “certificates.” This also was the issue that foreshadowed the medispa boom with an article, “Partnering with Physicians.” Yet for all of the antiquated language and quaint naivete, so many solid business principles that applied then still endure today. Exceed the expectations of your clients. Get the most profit out of every square foot. Focus on client retention and maximizing every ticket as much as on new client recruitment. Serve as a role model of ethical and transparent behavior. Make it easy for your staff to pursue continuing education. Track every aspect of your business.> >1994 “Compensation 101: Paying for Keeps” recognized that the commission structure was only one of the options open to progressive salon owners. “The Costs of Converting” took a microscope to the process and expense that a salon faced in choosing to add day spa services. “Make Your Space” updated salon owners on the latest trends in using natural materials and clued them into the critical role of both traffic flow and retail merchandising. “Nail Care: Counting on Fingers” anticipated the exploding mani/pedi market. “Can You Clone Your Success?” offered a blueprint for launching additional locations. “Tax Facts” helped owners cope with newly stringent requirements for both salons and staffers in reporting tips on IRS tax returns. “10 Salons on Warp Speed” presented meaty examples of how salons were applying a host of cutting-edge technologies. “Retail State of Mind” pulled retail out of the corner, giving at-home maintenance its own profit center chair at the salon industry table. “Higher Learning” celebrated the benefits of ongoing training with inspirational words from educators and a helpful list of advanced academies. “Niche Marketing” identified 20 target markets that posed great potential for the savvy salon owner who could address those distinct needs. “Get Down to Business: Writing Your Plan for Growth” urged owners to fuel continued success and not rest on the laurels of their recent good fortune. “Male Call” helped spas to tap into the burgeoning mens’ market. “Prescription for Medispa” examined the spa industry’s cautious but steadily developing partnership with the medical field. “Brand Your Business” enlightened owners still engaged in traditional marketing about the rewards of branding strategies. >1995 >1996 >1997 >1998 >1999 >2000 >2001 >2002 >2003 >2004 >2005 >2006 >2007 www.salontoday.com July 2008 | 41 http://www.salontoday.com
