Salon Today - July 2008 - (Page 48) [OWNER TO OWNER] Kay Charron Bien Soigné Windham, New Hampshire A MAJOR CHALLENGE I’VE FACED IN MY CAREER: Is that I’m not a hair stylist—I’m a licensed esthetician and nail tech. When we opened 11 years ago, the salon originally didn’t do hair. It was added about 18 months later. I believe this makes me work even harder to give my stylists what they need to be successful. I realize that just as the hair stylist who adds spa services struggles to understand the needs of a spa business, I need to do all I can to bring the same level of skill to my hair business that I bring to my spa. BEFORE I OWNED MY SALON: I had no business experience. THE MOST EFFECTIVE TECHNIQUE WE USE TO SELL RETAIL: Is doing it the old fashioned way. We educate clients on the best products for them, carry what we believe to be the best quality products that also provide the best results, and sell clients on the features and benefits. They come back and repurchase based on the fact that they see results, and if they aren’t happy, we have a 100-percent, money-back guarantee. I INSPIRE MY CLIENTS BY: Not letting them get caught up in negative trivia like bad weather or the price of gas. Life is what you make it. MY BUSINESS WOULD FALL APART WITHOUT: The cooperation of my staff. MY INDUSTRY HERO IS: Leo Lapiere. Leo is a consultant for the salon industry who saved my sanity when I began working with him four years ago. My salon is more efficient, cleaner, better-looking, organized, the staff is cooperative and my finances look better. It’s amazing that one person can put so much into perspective and give you the boundaries and skills you need to change all the things that many salon owners struggle with. “Challenges need to be viewed as opportunities to grow.” WHEN I’M STRESSED OUT: I remember that life is supposed to be easy and challenges need to be viewed as opportunities to grow. I LOVE WHAT I DO BECAUSE: I help both my clients and employees create positive change in their lives. 48 | July 2008 www.salontoday.com http://www.salontoday.com
