Salon Today - August 2008 - (Page 12) ADVERTISEMENT [EDITOR’S NOTE] Dear Professional, One of the major reasons businesses and individuals come together in an association like the Professional Beauty Association (PBA) is to become more powerful advocates at local, state and national levels. PBA members from around the country make a difference by making their voices heard on the issues closest to the beauty industry, including a tip tax credit for salon/spa owners, wage and hour issues, health care costs, license mobility, product and ingredient issues, estate tax relief, health and safety issues, and more. You can stay updated on industry issues by regularly visiting http://www.probeauty.org/advocacy. Check out photos and videos of PBA members making a difference, brush up on Government 101, and learn about how to get involved. If you don’t, who will? Vote for Beauty Elected officials exist to represent our views and interests, but they need to hear from us to know what those views and interests are. One of the best ways to get heard is also the easiest: just vote! Elections are just around the corner. If you haven’t registered to vote yet, now is the perfect time. It’s easy to do it online at http://www.probeauty.org/advocacy/vote08! License Mobility Update You can have a positive impact on your industry just by typing your name! In the February edition of this column, I introduced PBA’s License Mobility Project, an effort PBA is heavily involved in. In cooperation with other industry trade groups, PBA lobbies state licensing boards to adhere to national standards. The column listed a website where beauty professionals could sign a petition and reference state standards, http://www.probeauty. org/licensemobility. This is still a hot issue and PBA continues to collect signatures for the National Licensing Standards Petition. Let your legislators and state licensing boards know you want a standard license that can move across state lines! Welcome to Our World & PBA Capitol Hill Visits – September 10, 2008 Volunteers welcome! Each year, PBA takes Capitol Hill by storm for a day. Armed with talking points about issues such as tip tax reform, regulatory issues, association health plans and more, members meet with their congressional representatives for the Welcome to Our World (WTOW) and the PBA Capitol Hill Visits. This is an annual makeover for Congress that gives beauty professionals a platform from which to push legislative issues that are important to the industry. As they lobby, they perform beauty services, making WTOW one of the most popular annual traditions on Capitol Hill. The success of Welcome to Our World and the PBA Capitol Hill Visits is made possible by the generosity of salon professionals like you! For more information about these events, visit http://www. probeauty.org/wtow. Thank you for taking the time to get involved! Every voice gets heard when the entire industry comes together, and it all starts with beauty professionals like you and associations like PBA. Hi, Tech C Call me old school, but I’ve always been slow to welcome the latest technology into my life. Instead of using a Blackberry to stay organized, I still rely on my trusty grid of Post-It notes. And although it seems that the iPod debuted long ago, I just bought my first model last year. Truth be told, I’m intimidated by technology, but I am astounded by what a difference it can make if you give it a whirl. This lesson couldn’t be more true for salon owners, which is why we’ve devoted this issue to technology—a word that, like me, many of you might fear. But as contributing writer Rosanne Ullman points out in our cover story “Get With the Program,” technology—especially the sophisticated Here I am pictured at this year’s new breeds of salon software—can completely Salon Today 360° event, where I was thrilled to meet many of you for transform your business. the first time.
