Salon Today - August 2008 - (Page 40) [OWNER TO OWNER] Angela Justice Payton Place Salon North Little Rock, Arkansas THE TOUGHEST CHALLENGE I’VE EVER FACED AS A SALON OWNER IS: Knowing what you need to do to grow and knowing that you may lose the majority of your team to do that, but facing the fear and doing it anyway. I realize now that there is a lot of pruning that takes place as an owner—and it doesn’t always feel good— but it is necessary. THE MOST SATISFYING PART OF MY JOB IS: Getting to see smiles on all those faces that you know in some way—from the very pregnant guest who comes in because she feels unattractive, but you made her feel beautiful, to the stylist who just bought her first house. It’s so exciting to be a part of that. I’VE INCORPORATED TECHNOLOGY INTO MY BUSINESS BY: Having three computers—two at the front desk and one at the color bar on which we run Salon Biz software, having on-hold messaging for our phones, doing e-mail confirmations (our guests love this!), sending out promotional e-mail blasts and allowing our guests to book their appointments online via our website. Also, we’re about to start doing text confirmations. Technology is a beautiful thing! MY INDUSTRY HEROES ARE: Antoinette Beenders. She teaches in a way that I can easily learn from and she sees the world so beautifully. Marjorie Clark is another true inspiration to me. She has helped me realize the power that we really have to change the world as stylists. I KEEP MY STAFF HAPPY AND INSPIRED BY: Constantly challenging them to be the best they can be and helping them realize the potential that each and every one of them has to fulfill their dreams. We have all made vision boards together and put them all over the break room. “There is a lot of pruning that takes place as an owner— and it doesn’t always feel good—but it is necessary.” THE BIGGEST CHANGE I’VE NOTICED SINCE ENTERING THE INDUSTRY IS: The amazing world of technology. My, how it has changed over the 20 years of my career! Also, the caliber of students coming out of schools that have partnered with Aveda, Redken and Paul Mitchell are so impressive. LOOKING AHEAD, I AM MOST EXCITED ABOUT: The endless possibilities that I see with my business, the mark that I think I can leave on our industry to make it better and brighter, and the growth that I am seeing in myself to do things differently than I’ve ever done before. 40 | August 2008 www.salontoday.com http://www.salontoday.com
