Salon Today - September 2008 - (Page 10) ADVERTISEMENT [EDITOR’S NOTE] Dear Professional, The professional beauty industry is capable of accomplishing so much when we come together. We can grow our businesses, network with peers, celebrate artistry, take part in advanced education and support life-saving research. From July 13-15, beauty professionals from every sector of the industry converged in Las Vegas for Cosmoprof North America, PBA Annual Business Forum, the North American Hairstyling Awards, PBA Learning Lounge, and the City of Hope™ honoree dinner. Cosmoprof North America Recognized as one of the top 200 shows in the US by Trade Show Weekly, Cosmoprof North America (CPNA) took place July 13-15, 2008. It is the only comprehensive business-to-business beauty trade show event in North America. With an expanded show floor; on-the-floor education from sources like WWD, the Benchmarking Company and Beauty Store Business; specialty programs like Discover Beauty; and exhibitors from North America and around the world, Cosmoprof North America was definitely the place the beauty industry belonged. PBA Annual Business Forum & Breakfast Every year at PBA’s Annual Business Forum, the association highlights trends that are shaping the industry, shows how PBA is responding to members’ needs, and provides business insights via celebrated keynote speakers. With the 2008 presidential campaign season in full swing, this year’s keynote speakers, James Carville and Mary Matalin, provided an entertaining and informative insider’s look at where the presidential candidates stand… and what might still be in store for them. PBA was also proud to recognize the growing number of members serving on committees and acknowledged outgoing Leadership Council members, Bob Peel, Jr, Gary Udell, Jack Storey and Eveline Charles. PBA Learning Lounge Salon owners attending Cosmoprof North America got a sneak preview of the type of education they will receive when PBA Symposium moves to a new home in Las Vegas with Cosmoprof North America in July 2009. During the PBA Learning Lounge: Combat Compensation, salon owners had an opportunity to learn from the industry’s leading experts on compensation options for their salons. Panelists Neil Ducoff (Strategies), Peter Mahoney (Salon Resource Group), and Bert Carder (YBN) provided salon owners insight into their systems, and a salon owner panel, which included Orlando Cumberlander (Noir et Blanc), Marilyn Ihloff (Ihloff Salon and Day Spa) and Pat Helmandollar (Savvy Salon and Day Spa) offered firsthand knowledge and valuable advice on how to motivate and maintain staff – one of several topics important to both new and experienced salon owners. City of Hope™ Reception & Dinner PBA is proud to support City of Hope™ and the 2008 campaign, “Beauty Can Cure.” This year’s City of Hope™ Spirit of Life Award recipient, Carmen DePasquale, was honored at a dinner on Monday, July 14, 2008, at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. Carmen and his City of Hope™ team announced that the generosity of this industry had raised over one million dollars, and the figure was still growing! Carmen’s goal in addressing the group was to bring all segments of our industry together, and he was hugely successful. Congratulations to Carmen on his honor and all he has done to support City of Hope™. Thank you to all of you who joined us in Las Vegas. We hope that you had an opportunity to network with your industry peers and to educate yourself on growing trends and products. And we look forward to seeing you in Vegas, July 18-21, 2009, for the 7th Edition of Cosmoprof North America, NAHA 20 and Symposium 13. The Next Level W What do leading salons have in common? They ask the same questions: “Where do we grow next? What is the next trend? How do we take our team from good to great? How do we build loyalty? What resources can help us reach our goals? What can we learn from our peers? How can we outperform past success? How can I be a better leader? Where do we want to go, and how are we going to get there?” In the 15 years since SALON TODAY became a part of the MODERN SALON Media portfolio, our mission has been to help salon owners and industry leaders answer these questions for each other, in an owner-to-owner forum we are proud and privileged to produce each month. When we acquired SALON TODAY in 1993 from founders Howard Hafetz and Vicki Christopher of Raylon Corp., the business “conversation” in the salon industry was quite different. Many companies who served salons still considered “business” almost a dirty word, meaning they didn’t believe a magazine would hold salon owners’ attention or imagination if it wasn’t primarily about creative artistry and technical craft. Fortunately, Howard and Vicki recognized a genuine hunger among a group of leading and aspiring salons for more salon management information and advice. What started as a newsletter for their distributorship’s best customers is now firmly positioned as the first and only professional beauty publication committed exclusively to salon business success. After MODERN picked up the SALON TODAY reins, the salon industry and its business viewpoint continued to evolve. It was an exciting time to be the new editor of SALON TODAY, and I was honored to help accelerate the salon owner dialogue to provide more benchmarking, best practices and analysis on subjects ranging from compensation to business ethics, from salon software to spa expansion. Today, the professional beauty industry is at another crossroads, and its time for SALON TODAY to again shift the business conversation into a higher gear. Through the coming months, I will be working with a team of talented staff editors and experienced contributors to build “the next level” of SALON TODAY. We’ve been asking ourselves the same questions I mentioned above, and we already have compelling new topics and formats planned for 2009. Expect more industry analysis, more interactive opportunities and, for the 2010 edition, a revamping of the SALON TODAY 200. Before we finalize any of it, however, we want your feedback and suggestions. Tell us where you’d like the SALON TODAY conversation to go. E-mail me at mmusgrove@vancepublishing.com.
