To achieve success, it’s important to have a plan that helps staffers set priorities, says Richard Lepsinger, co-author of Flexible Leadership: Creating Value by Balancing Multiple Challenges and Choices. Among his top tips: ALIGN GOALS. Individual goals should align with those of other members of the staff, as well as with the larger goals for the salon. ESTABLISH CLEAR EXPECTATIONS. Owners or managers should help staff set reachable goals and benchmarks. DON’T MICROMANAGE. Many salon employees are entrepreneurial-minded and quite capable of taking charge. Although those staffers should be monitored, Lepsinger cautions owners not to over-direct their efforts. ENCOURAGE FRIENDSHIP. The nature of the staff’s informal relationship with each other is key to getting things done. Whether it’s through staff meetings or in the lunchroom, your salon should provide a time for everyone to get to know each other. These efforts pay off, not just for the staff but for the leader as well. “The staff gets focused on becoming more efficient, retaining customers, responding to customer feedback and monitoring the quality of their own work,” says Lepsinger. “One day, the owner will look around and realize that the mission statement actually rings true. It’s one of the best feelings a leader will ever have.” For the complete list of how to best manage your staff, visit www.FirstChair.com. School is in Session A Aquage hosted its first-ever master class academy at Paris Studio in South Beach, Florida. The two-day, hands-on program included two cutting classes, a business seminar and dress work master class, along with a salon image, branding and photography session. Led by Aquage co-founder Luis Alvarez, the team included experts Eric Fisher (Salon Entrepreneur of the Year winner) and Ann Bray (NAHA award winner).
