Salon Today - December 2008 - (Page 16) ADVERTISEMENT [RECEPTION] Dear Professional, The Professional Beauty Association (PBA) is a nonprofit trade association made up of manufacturers, distributors, and salons/spas that want to improve individual businesses and our industry as a whole. One of the ways PBA serves its members and trade is by measuring the state of the industry and recording marketplace trends, providing regular benchmarks. Without benchmarks like these, we wouldn’t know where we are doing well as an industry and where we can continue to grow and improve. PBA knows how important it is to have industry figures available to members and to lawmakers making decisions that affect our businesses, which is why we’re working on expanding all our research initiatives. I’d like to mention some of the studies recently completed or currently in the works: A Landmark Study on Beauty Consumers In 2009, a truly landmark study on what consumers want in the beauty industry will launch at PBA Symposium, an educational business event for the entire industry taking place July 19–21, 2009, in Las Vegas. A study like this has never been conducted before, and it will take nearly a year to complete, but the results will be invaluable for everyone connected to our industry, from manufacturers and distributors to salons/spas and consumers. This research could fundamentally change what we know about our industry and reveal best practices that will help shape the next iteration of the professional beauty industry. How exciting is that! The 2008 Market Shipment Study Each year, professional hair product manufacturers, such as RUSK, anonymously share their data with an independent public accounting firm that prepares a comprehensive market overview of the industry for PBA. This data is found in the PBA Market Shipment Study and is available nowhere else - many PBA members feel the value of this study alone pays for their membership. This important data is compiled from actual, projected and estimated sales data. Part One of the 2008 Market Shipment Study - with data totals for the first half of 2008, and complete figures for 2005 through 2007 - is now available. The 2008 Market Shipment Study Created for distributor members of PBA, this survey answers questions such as: “Are our store sales invoices setting the pace for the industry - or lagging behind?” There is no better way to discover how your business compares with those of other distributors in the professional beauty industry, and the results of the 2008 survey are now available. Distributors who participate in the survey receive a special customized comparison worksheet for their business, but survey results are not available to members outside the distributor section or to non-members. To learn more about these powerful research initiatives dedicated to improving both the performance and consumer perspective on our industry, to get involved, or to purchase copies of the studies, visit probeauty. org. I know this research will prove as valuable to you as it has to my own company! Ready, Set, Shoot C Cultivate creative muscle and boost team spirit by encouraging interested staff members to participate in national photo competitions. Your team can take advantage of the January lull by making it a time to solicit for models, create a unique point of view, hire a photographer and shoot. Should they win, a national title is a wonderful marketing tool for both your staff and your business. Deadlines are fast approaching for: NAHA 20: Honor the Work. Stories. Style! SHOW AND SELL ENTICE CLIENTS TO ASK for those valuable add-on services by prominently displaying quick, fun treatments. Creator of The Repêchage Facial Bar Concept, Lydia Sarfati says, “Show, tell and you will sell!” Sarfati institutes this concept in her facial bar—express facials are performed in a salon-like atmosphere (stations with upright chairs) where others clients can see—and envy—the treatments. Since Facial Bar facials are shorter, clients can experience more of the services offered in the salon, Sarfati says. Implement this show-and-tell technique in your salon by making services more visible and with eye-catching marketing.
