Salon Today - December 2008 - (Page 8) [EDITOR’S NOTE] Lesson in Philanthropy A You have a unique opportunity to teach your staff about the personal and professional power of charitable giving. A few weeks into the school year, my 13-year-old daughter Rachel came home with her first project assignment—to organize a charitable activity and donate at least 15 service hours. Although I immediately recognized the character-building value of the assignment, I have to admit my first working-mom reaction was a not-so-silent groan. I bit my tongue as I read through the project’s parameters: Students were to choose a valid local organization and contact them to discover their needs. Next, students were required to write an outline of their plan, including goals. Finally, the teacher encouraged the students to partner up with other students on their projects. Rachel and two friends contacted a facility that rehabilitates abused and abandoned horses. The girls learned of an event to raise funds needed to offset the expense of housing the horses. They decided to organize and staff a bake sale at the gathering. After a sleepover and baking bonanza, the girls manned their booth and sold goodies to hungry riders. They raised close to $100, but the assignment gave them a priceless lesson on the benefits of helping others. What’s the Lesson? As a salon or spa owner, you have the unique opportunity to teach your staff about the personal and professional power of charitable giving. Interestingly, my daughter’s assignment outlined some important points about organizing a successful event: • CHOOSE YOUR CHARITY CAREFULLY. Is it a reputable organization? Will it tug at the heartstrings of your staff and clients? Does it have a strong local presence? • DEVELOP A PLAN. What does the organization really need—money, time, donated beauty services? What activity would best fulfill these needs? How will you publicize your activity? How will you involve clients and staff? Did you set a goal that’s attainable, yet challenging? • STRENGTH IN NUMBERS. The more an event is fueled by team cooperation and spirit, the more fun and successful it will be. As an added bonus, the activity teaches your staff an important lesson in teamwork. This special issue on philanthropy promises to offer much inspiration for your next event. In our cover story beginning on page 26, Vidal Sassoon demonstrates how one individual, armed with passion and a plan, can ignite an industry to action. On page 28, 14 salons detail their fund-raising ideas, from the plan of attack to how they involved staff and clients to the final result.
