Surprise Visit When I had my color done the week before the holidays, my colorist was visibly shaken. She told me the state board had conducted a surprise inspection the day before, and her salon had been cited for not having enough jars of Barbicide and not keeping tools properly covered. Three service providers were found to have expired licenses, and one senior stylist, who sported a packed, pre-holiday book, was told to “put down the scissors and step away from the client.” The conversation prompted me to contact Laura Ortmann, a former attorney who recently purchased Ginger Bay Salon and Spa in St. Louis, Missouri. Having written industry papers on the subject of complying with state board regulations, Ortmann’s given a lot of thought to the topic. She makes the following recommendations on preparing your salon for the next state board inspection: “Brushing up on • In Missouri, all licenses must be hung near the stations, but Ortmann tracks all expiration dates on required licenses and state board statutes liability insurance through an Excel spreadsheet and sends can preserve the reminders to staff members. • In addition to sharing the state’s book on statutes and regulations health of your with department heads, Ortmann copies all inspection reports and employees and shares them with team members. “The reports show you exactly is being since we clients, protect your what the saloncelebrate graded on, and she says. have never had a citation, we these reports,” reputation and save • Periodically, Ortmann invites members of her state board in to you thousands in speak to her employees. “For example, when nail services were getting a lot of press about sanitation concerns, we invited a speaker unwanted fines.” to talk about proper sanitation procedures,” she explains. Staying on top of regulations is an ongoing process, reports Ortmann. “On their own, our employees developed inspection sheets, and they randomly inspect each other. This peer-to-peer inspection raises the bar for everyone.” None of the recommendations put forth by Ortmann are complicated, expensive or even that time-consuming, but enacting them can help you preserve the health of your employees and clients, protect your reputation and save you thousands in unwanted fines. Take a few hours this year to review and be prepared. At SALON TODAY, we also are reviewing and preparing as we embark next month on a massive editorial redesign. We’re stretching in new directions, incorporating more voices and tapping fresh topics.
