DYK (Did You Know?) Vascular Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) - blockages in the circulation to the head, neck, abdomen, arms or legs due to atherosclerosis or other diseases. If you have diabetes, it may increase the chances for the development of several vascular diseases. • Doppler arterial exams of the legs or arms - produces two-dimensional color images that show if blood flow is affected by problems in the blood vessels, such as cholesterol deposits. • Duplex ultrasound scan - shows how blood is flowing through your vessels and measures the speed of the flow of blood. It can also be useful to estimate the diameter of a blood vessel as well as the amount of obstruction, if any, in the blood vessel. • Treadmill exercise testing for claudication (leg pain with walking). • Ankle-Brachial Index Test - measures your blood pressure in your ankle and in your arm. The two numbers are compared forming a ratio to determine your ABI. Cerebrovascular Disease - blockages in the arteries to the brain that may increase the risk of stroke. • Carotid artery duplex scan – is an ultrasound of the arteries of your head and neck to detect calcium and narrowings. Deep Venous Thrombosis (DVT) - blood clots in the veins that could migrate to the lungs. • Venous duplex scan of the arms or legs – ultrasound that measures the speed of blood flow and to see the structure of your veins and sometimes the clots themselves. • Inferior vena cava (IVC) scan – ultrasound that evaluates the largest vein in the body. renal Disease - circulatory disorders of the kidneys that cause hypertension (high blood pressure) or kidney failure. • Renal artery duplex scan – ultrasound that measures the arterial blood flow to the kidneys. • Renal vein duplex scan – ultrasound that measures the venous blood flow from the kidneys. Aortic Aneurysms - a widening of the major artery in your chest or abdomen that can cause a fatal rupture. • Aortic duplex scan - ultrasound that evaluates the blood flow of the largest artery in the body.
