URBAN L ANDSCAPING

"Fifty years ago, people thought of landscape
architecture as the beautification of parks and
high-end residential properties," says Van Lengen;
it was set apart from urban environments. But that's
changed, she says. As architects have continued
to think about building projects and city planning
more holistically, they've focused on incorporating
landscape design into the heart of the city.
In New York, that trend started with Brooklyn
Bridge Park, a reclaimed industrial waterfront area,
and is now extending to The Big U, which includes
a waterfront park in lower Manhattan and is
intended to act as a buffer against storm damage
and rising sea levels. "You can design a landscape
for protection or you can design it to enjoy, and
where we are in landscape architecture is we can do
both," says Prosky. Other cities have incorporated
green roofs, bioswales, and rainwater gardens as
part of their systems of wastewater management.
As landscape architects have moved to integrate
the natural and built environments, they have
been turning away from exotic tropical plants in
favor of local species that will naturally thrive in a
place. "The base of perennials is moving away from
the traditional French Versailles style of everything
being very controlled, to scrappy native species
