CitiesGoGreen - November 2008 - (Page 6) In Motion Greener Runway Asphalt at Logan Boston’s Logan International Airport is paving the way for greener US airports by testing an asphalt that uses 20% less energy to make, incorporates up to 20% recycled asphalt and upon application produces 20% fewer greenhouse gas emissions. “Warm-mix asphalt” contains a wax allowing it to be mixed and laid at substantially lower temperatures than traditional “hot-mix” asphalt. It can also be laid thicker and cures more quickly, is less smelly (good for the neighbors and workers) and it may last longer than the pavement it replaces. Warm-mix asphalt has been used at European airports, on race tracks and in high-use port applications, but Logan is the first US airport to try it, under strict FAA guidelines. Albert Lozano-Fotolia.com Cut PC Power Use and Expense A free program called Edison, from Verdiem (www.Verdiem. com), is claimed to reduce PC energy use and save up to $95 for each one, depending on local power costs and computer type. The average PC generates 1000 pounds of CO2 a year and wastes 80% of its energy. With a billion PCs in use worldwide and a projected quadrupling, this adds up. Users set parameters and can compare settings to see the savings in money and greenhouse gas emissions. The program tracks estimated savings of money, energy and CO2. Edison is for individual PC users running Windows XP or Vista; a similar Verdiem product, Surveyor, is for networked computers in office settings. Add your comments and ideas at CitiesGoGreen.com More Green Offices for Boston America’s largest office building owner is seeking green certification for all its Boston office buildings, a move that will increase the city’s green-certified office supply by 50%. Equity Office Properties Trust will be retrofitting existing buildings to at least LEED Silver standard over the next several years, citing client demand as a key factor in its decision. “We’re doing this from a social responsibility perspective, but it’s also become necessary to maintain tenants,” said Greg Shay, president of Boston operations for Equity Office, as quoted in Boston.com. “It’s gotten to the point where not taking action is somewhat foolish.” The company owns more than 700 million square feet of office space in metropolitan areas across the nation, and executives say the Massachusetts retrofits could be the beginning of a national effort. 6 November 2008 ©aberenyi-fotolia.com http://www.massport.com/about/press_news_GAsphalt.html http://www.warmmixasphalt.com http://www.verdiem.com/news/pr_20080806.asp http://www.verdiem.com http://citiesgogreen.com http://www.verdiem.com http://citiesgogreen.com http://www.boston.com/lifestyle/green/articles/2008/08/28/bostons_biggest_property_owner_going_all_green/ http://citiesgogreen.com
