Veritas Press Catalog 2008/2009 - (Page 80) V E R I T A S P R E S S . C O M What is “Classical Christian Education?” Classical Christian education is an educational methodology that emphasizes the Trivium (teaching grammar, dialectic, and rhetoric) from a Christian perspective. Children tend to grow through stages that generally coincide with the three areas of the Trivium. Young children like to memorize and chant, which lines up with the grammar stage, early teens become more argumentative and questioning during the dialectic stage, and late teens tend to be concerned with their image and how they are perceived, coinciding to the rhetoric stage. Classical educators from the past have recognized that if we teach children according to these phases, we are teaching to their strengths and interests. When first exposed to classical Christian education, we made changes in our lives to provide our children with this kind of education. We are glad we did. Recovering the Lost Tools of Learning and the other titles grouped here will probably have the same effect on you. Your children are worth it. There is a better way to educate, and this is it. My Favorite Songs: Maria von Trapp’s Childhood Folk Songs Maria von Trapp The Case for Classical Christian Education Douglas Wilson Recovering the Lost Tools of Learning Douglas Wilson Did you know that The Sound of Music would never have been made if it weren’t for homeschooling? In real life, the third eldest von Trapp daughter is named Maria, and it was to educate her that the woman (who one day would be portrayed by Julie Andrews in a movie) came to stay with the Trapps. We learned that, and many other interesting facts when we flew up to the Trapp Family Lodge in Vermont and interviewed Maria. A while back Maria had asked if Veritas Press would be interested in publishing a collection of Austrian folk tunes from her childhood. We were thrilled to accept. She had translated the songs for children in New Guinea when she was a missionary and now she wanted them to be available for Englishspeaking children to enjoy. Even though these dear songs would be a delight on their own, this new book also has original artwork, photographs from Maria’s life, and stories from her childhood, life in the Trapp Family Singers, and missions work. Maria writes: “Sing alone or with family and friends, but just sing, sing, sing! I believe that singing lifts your own heart and other people’s hearts. . . . People often tell me, “We used to sing at home.” Let’s forget about “used to” and sing again. Sing, sing sing!” #000-981 $19.95 Building upon Recovering the Lost Tools of Learning, Wilson updates and expands the importance and value of classical and Christian education. Reading it might change your life—be careful. You’ll also find he had some kind words for Veritas Press therein. Thanks, Doug. Soft 256p #165-009 $17.99 Classical and Christian Education Gregg Strawbridge In this literally life-changing book Wilson eloquently makes the iron-clad case for the necessity to educate our children in a Christian school or home school, and he does so while introducing the successes of the past using methodology and content known as classical Christian education. Virtually all involved in the entire movement intent on recovering these time proven ideas and methods owe their beginning to Wilson’s writing in this work. It is a must for all who would see education recover and godliness prevail in the rearing of the next generation. 00000 Soft 215p #165-060 $15.99 Our pastor has put in this succinct essay what many have spent hours describing—the value, benefits, and definitions of classical Christian education.
