Vancouver Meeting Planners Guide 2008-2009 - (Page 97) Beyond Vancouver Touring Suggestions With all that Vancouver has to offer, your attendees will have plenty to see and do in the city. But if they want to turn their business trip into an extended stay with some rest and relaxation in the regions outside Vancouver, there’s plenty to pique their interest — including Whistler, the Fraser Valley and Vancouver Island all nearby. Resorts, fishing lodges and other accommodations in outlying areas can also enhance their trip by offering activities, adventures and unique atmosphere. (See page 102 for fishing lodge and resort listings.) Cruise Vancouver to Alaska Duration: 7 to 14 days Gateway to the legendary thousand-mile Inside Passage — a wondrous maze of islands, glacier-carved fjords and ports — Vancouver serves as the point of embarkation and disembarkation for Alaska cruise vacations. Vancouver’s cruise ship facilities, Canada Place (999 Canada Place Way) and Ballantyne Terminal (655 Centennial Rd.), are close to hotels and the city’s many attractions, galleries and shopping. From May to September vessels use Vancouver’s harbour as part of the Vancouver–Alaska route, one of the most popular cruises in the world. The seven- to 14-day cruises offer some of the world’s most spectacular scenery and a variety of travel packages with wide market appeal. Classic seven-day cruises travel through the Inside Passage to or from southeast Alaska’s most popular ports. Whistler Duration: 1 to 5 days Whistler is the perfect all-season vacation stop on the West Coast. Many popular activities center on the Whistler Mountain Gondola, an aerial tram that whisks visitors to the top of a 6,000-foot peak for incredible views. In the summer, it provides unmatched access to mountaintop hiking and carries mountain bikers to the top for thrilling descents along trails and glades. In winter, it provides access to the ski runs on Whistler Mountain. Together with Blackcomb Mountain, there are more than 3,307 hectares (8,171 acres) of skiable terrain, making Whistler the largest ski resort in North America. For a real adrenaline rush, try zip trekking. High above the ground, you can see the local rainforests like you’ve never seen them before. For those who prefer relaxation to adventure, Whistler Village is packed with world-class restaurants, shopping, spas and boutiques. For more information, visit tourismwhistler.com.
