ost tasting rooms pair
wine with food to
highlight the flavors in
the glass. D'Anbino Vineyards & Cellars
turns up the volume on its sustainable,
biodynamic, estate-grown Cabs and
Syrahs with music.
It's a natural choice for the owners,
John D'Andrea and winemaker
Carmine Rubino (whose last names
blend to make their winery label).
The two grew up like brothers in New
Jersey (but are actually uncle and
nephew) and had long, successful
careers in the music industry before
planting vineyards in Paso Robles in
1995.
Today, their downtown tasting
room is a perfect blend of, and
tribute to, their two passions, with
gold medals from the San Diego
International Wine Competition
displayed right next to the Emmys and
Grammys the two men have won for
their music.
D'Andrea, a composer, arranger
and music writer, has made 25 Gold
and Platinum Records; won a Grammy
for his song "(I've Had) The Time of
My Life" in the film Dirty Dancing, and

an Emmy for composing the song
for Days of Our Lives; and is the man
behind the theme for Baywatch. The
list goes on.
Rubino, a sound engineer, has
recorded for artists like Sammy
Davis, The Who, The Bee Gees (at
Carnegie Hall), Three Dog Night and
Blood, Sweat & Tears; has an Emmy
for his work on the show Deadwood;
and recorded the Dirty Dancing
soundtrack. The list goes on.

If you ask JoAnn Rubino, Carmine
Rubino's wife and the tasting room
manager, she will tell you all about
the family's musical claims to fame.
In a sweet New Jersey-accent, she
says people have a lot of fun at the
tasting room, which is a veritable
music history museum, requesting
autographs on their bottles and taking
pictures in front of the memorabilia.

The venue has also turned into quite
the hot spot to catch live performances.
Bands like The Barflyz (featuring
musicians that perform with the Steve
Miller Band and Tower of Power) and
local legends like Dawn Lambeth come
in to play regularly, benefiting from
Rubino's professional sound mixing
expertise.
To get a taste of how this rich music
background complements the wine, one
has only to try the "Quadraphonic." A
four-varietal blend, the wine is named
after surround sound's pre-cursor, which
consisted of four speakers set in the
corners of a room, and which Rubino
used to re-mix John Lennon's music in
the early '70s.
One sip, amplified by live music in
the tasting room, offers a multi-sensory
wine tasting experience that's nothing
short of electric.
