n an intimate scene
in this DVD's bonus
features, after a short
interview and solo slide
performance at home
("Murdering Blues" on
his '64 Gibson Firebird
V), Winter says, "I love
playing guitar. It's the only
thing I've ever been really
great at." The key word is
"great," and that's a major
understatement.
Before his death in
2014, Johnny Winter was
one of the greatest blues
guitarists (and a topnotch
vocalist), and it'd be hard
to name a slide player
who combined dazzling
chops with authenticity
with such ease. In the
recording studio, he sits
down with his steel-bodied National Duolian and
knocks off Son House's
"Death letter" in one take,
maintaining great intonation without even looking
at his hands! Granted, he
was near-blind until having lasik surgery a few
months before his death,
but he could see his guitar; he just didn't need to.
As he said in his July '14
VG cover story, "I know
exactly where I'm going."
Director Greg Olliver
didn't just make a concert
film; his documentary follows Winter on stage and

and Dirty
on the bus, at home, and
even in a session with the
guitarist's therapist. The
result is a warts-and-all,
insider look at a rock and
blues legend who could be
somewhat of a recluse.
His heroin habit in the
early '70s, being overmedicated by a crooked
manager, the ramifications
of his admitted OCD -
nothing's off limits. One
touching moment comes
when, after painstakingly
shaving down Johnny's
methadone pills, guitarist/manager Paul Nelson
informs the bluesman
that, unbeknownst to
him, he's been off the
drug for months.
Ironically, in the best
health he'd enjoyed in
decades, the 70-year-

old died of natural
causes while on tour,
just a couple of years
after this was filmed.
In addition to archival
footage, including a TV
interview with B.B. King,
glowing interviews come
courtesy Derek Trucks,
Billy Gibbons, Joe Perry,
Warren Haynes, James
Cotton, Susan Tedeschi,
Tommy Shannon, brother
Edgar (including a short
but fascinating clip of Edgar essentially interviewing Johnny on the tour
bus), and luther Nallie,
who gave the adolescent
brothers guitar lessons
in Beaumont, Texas.
Inexplicably, Johnny
Winter has still not been
inducted into the Rock
& Roll Hall of Fame.
But being inducted into
the Blues Hall of Fame
in '88, its first white
member, was no doubt
infinitely more meaningful
to him. After his plaque is
finally presented to him at
a Memphis gig decades
later, he's like a kid with
a Christmas toy on the
bus, looking at it and
saying, "That's so cool.
I had tears in my eyes."
Thank goodness
Olliver chose Winter
as a documentary
subject, and thanks to
Johnny for granting
such unprecedented
access. - Dan Forte

"The spirit of ZZ
Top meets Texas
boogie rock," the Night Hawks play up
the image of unpretentious good ol'boys
you could have a beer with. They're plaidshirt dudes in cowboy hats and beards,
ensconced in Memphis soul, blues, old
cars, and cheap whiskey.
Their latest album displays clever artistry
with drummer Matt Mabe being the MVP
of the band's hypnotic sound. American
influences are boiled down to their essence, creating an intoxicating hybrid of
Texas stench, white blues through a 1960s
strainer, and a tab of acid. Based in Fort
Worth, their fourth album evokes the feeling that you've imbibed too much tequila,
lost track of time, and discover you're sitting
alone in a dangerous honky-tonk.
Bassist Pat Adams adeptly secures the
bottom end as Sam Anderson and David
Matsler weave vocals and electric guitars
like Siamese twins. They've gathered
together influences from a narrow corner
of the room without being shameless
copycats. They excel at the slow boogie,
but utilize the blues stomp to great affect.
"Liberty Bell" and "Medicine Man" stand
out, making for a refreshing blues-based
psychedelic experience. - OJ

tribute album to the Stanley Brothers,
backed by the Clinch Mountain Boys, and
became members of the band. That album
and two others, Michigan Bluegrass and
1973's Gospel Echoes Of The Stanley Brothers, comprise this two-CD set.
Reports vary regarding how much Stanley participated on the tribute album; some
say the group's guitarist Roy Lee Centers
handled most banjo parts. If so, that's
impressive, because Centers' guitar leads
are facile and deep-toned, as on "Rock Bottom" and "Leaning On Jesus." That Skaggs'
mandolin playing is dazzling and authentic
is no surprise; he was sitting in with Flatt
and Scruggs as well as Bill Monroe before
he'd turned eight.
He and Whitley uncannily capture the
Stanley Brothers' harmonies. Both went
on to mainstream Nashville success, but
Whitley drank himself to death at 33.
Skaggs remains one of bluegrass' leading
lights. - DF
