and the same people managed them. Gary
never ripped off Peter; Peter told him he
didn't want the guitar. Gary is not here
to put his story out, but I was there that
day with him. Beware of forums!
You jammed with the Allman Brothers
at the Beacon Theatre. How did that
happen?

I'm a longtime friend of Warren Haynes
and we played together at a Gov't Mule gig
here in the U.K. After the show, he told
me the Allmans were going to be at The
Beacon later that year. I'd always wanted to
see them play there, so I went, and called
him when I arrived. My intention was only
to be in the audience, but Warren asked
me to join them for "One Way Out" and
it was one of the highlights of my career
- they are such a powerhouse, with two
drummers plus Warren and Derek Trucks.
When my part came up, I started with a
few simple blues licks, and the smile on
Derek's face let me know we were going to
make some good music. Magical evening,
recorded as well!
You're also a regular with Joe
Bonamassa.

Yes, we've become good friends, I have
a lot of respect for Joe, who has always
loved U.K. guitarists from the '60s. I've
guested on many of his shows and loaned
him The Beast. In fact, I joke about how
he has played it more than I have. He's a
great artist, avid collector, and one of the
hardest-working people out there today.
Shine has been a great success for
you. What do you recall about recording it?

I thought my days of record contracts
were over, but in 2013 I received a call from
Joe Bonamassa's label, and we recorded
Shine at Abbey Road. Joe is featured on
the title track, David Coverdale sang a new
version of our first co-write, "Trouble,"
which also has Ian Paice on drums, so it's
almost a reunion!
Recording was a lot of fun, with everyone
enjoying working together without any
pressure. I wrote most of the songs. There
is a nice cover of an old Fleetwood Mac
song, "Dragonfly," which was an homage to
Peter Green and Danny Kirwan. I intended
to ask Gary Moore to play on that track,
but that was not possible after his tragic
early death.
Abbey Road is a great recording environment. The place reeks with nostalgia.
You've had a signature model PRS for
several years now...

At the Frankfurt Music convention
in 2011, Paul Smith said to me, "Bernie,
why don't you play PRS guitars?" I said,
"Because I don't have one!" But, I told

(LEFT TO RIGHT) A young Marsden onstage with Skinny
Cat and his Gibson SG. Ticket stub from a 1981 Whitesnake
concert that included Billy Squier as an opener.

a lie! I had the McCarty back home. He
put his own guitar around my neck and
said, "Well, you do now." That started a
conversation and I realized Paul was a
real guitar fan who just happened to own
the company! It was a great honor that he
wanted me involved in a signature model.
We discussed options and decided to do a
double-humbucker with quality components, all to be made affordable. I suggested
an SE model, which are their imports, and
it has been very successful. Not all players
have the resources to spend thousands of
pounds on a guitar, especially a first proper
guitar, but they do need instruments that
sound and play great. The end result was
a great signature model.
I'm very proud to be associated with the
guitar and the company. They care. I do
clinics for PRS and there may be another
product in the future. The prototype was so
good I had no hesitation to use it on Shine.
Do you notice a difference between
U.K. players and those in the U.S.?

There's a subtle difference in the way
U.K. players handle the blues, especially
vibrato. When Paul Reed Smith listens to
me, he always smiles. He told me, "You
Brits are different. Do that again." One
master was, of course, Paul Kossoff - so
instantly recognizable. EC, Jeff B., Jimmy
Page... I could go on.

Are you still writing?

Yes, I love to come up with new songs.
I recently wrote "Place In My Heart,"
which Joe Bonamassa asked if he could
do. "Of course!" was the reply, and Joe
created a great track with nice Gary Moore
influences.
Any favorites among players on the
current blues and rock scene?

Yes, listen to the brothers Landreth -
fantastic vocals and slide playing. You'll
hear the influence of great bands from
both sides of the Atlantic. Plus, Jo Anne
Shaw Taylor, Blake Mills... there are good
people out there.
What's next?

I'm working on demos for the follow
up to Shine, and still searching for great
guitars and amps. Still trying to write
another #1! I'm also about to publish
an autobiography - there will be lots of
guitarspeak in it.
David Plues writes for Guitar & Bass Magazine in
the U.K., is a regular at the Arlington Guitar Show,
and author of several DVDs. He's also a musician,
lecturer, film/photography specialist, and creator
of burst-videobase.com.
