Day of the Dead

The Gratef u l
Dead have always
had a street-cred
problem in some rock quarters. Dave Marsh
infamously called them "the worst band in
creation." Kurt Cobain was photographed
with a "Kill the Grateful Dead" T-shirt (his
wife, ironically, is Phil Lesh's goddaughter).
Perhaps most damning of all, critic Jim
DeRogatis blamed the Dead for giving us
Hootie and the Blowfish.
Aaron and Bryce Dessner of the National
attempt to set the record straight by enlisting some of their favorite artists to cover the
Dead in this massive collection. The result
- all five hours and 59 tracks - might be
thought of as The Dead for the Pitchfork Set.
The artists put varying degrees of spin

Americana music on a transatlantic trip.

HOT PICKIN'

I

t should come as no
surprise that an album
teaming Telemaster
Bill Kirchen with pedalsteel wizard Audie de
Lone would overflow
with hot picking. The big
wow here is the widely
varied styles of music
accentuated by that
picking.
Kirchen needs little introduction. A co-founder
of Commander Cody and
His Lost Planet Airmen,
his trademark Tele licks
provided inspiration for
the original Americana
sound. Just check out
the band's 1972 Top 10
hit, "Hot Rod Lincoln."
De Lone may not be as
well known in the United
States, but he's a household name among British
pub-rock fans. In '69, he
co-founded the California country-rock band
Eggs Over Easy; touring
England shortly after,
they hooked up with a
gig at a London pub and
helped
Elvis Presley
sparked pub rock.

'70s and have since written songs for and played
behind the likes of Nick
Lowe and Elvis Costello.
This new album trades

off songwriting credits
(along with several wellchosen covers) and both
of their all-star British
and American bands.
They kick off proceedings with "Hounds of the
Bakersfield," a timely
tribute to Merle Haggard
and his Strangers, and
especially Roy Nichols
on Tele. The lyrics may
be pure fun and fancy,
but the picking will
inspire plenty of dropped

jaws. Kirchen's tone
is Tele-perfect as he
peels off doublestops,
Travis-style licks, and
high-speed bends, all
with plenty of twang.
De Lone is in turn
inspired to excel.
Songwriter Butch
Hancock joins in on his
song "Oxblood," dueting
with Kirchen on vocals.
The song's upbeat Texas
boogie is driving and hot.
De Lone and Kirchen
venture into gospel,
R&B, and soul with
"Somebody's Goin'
Home," a nod to the Staple Singers, and "Warm
And Tender Love," which
drips with a Memphis
soul-ballad vibe.
The duo closes the
album with Bob Dylan's
"The Times They Are
A-Changin'." Kirchen
remembers seeing Dylan
in '63 in his folkie phase,
then again in '64 when
he went electric at the
Newport Folk Festival.
Their cover combines
the eras into a raucous
version that retains
the song's anthemic
power while infusing it
with a new, rollicking
energy. - Michael Dregni

I n Ju l y 1958 ,
Chet Atkins and
his half-brother,
singer-guitarist Jim
Atkins, a member
of Les Paul's original 1930s trio, recorded
six songs at RCA's Nashville studio for this
LP, conceived as six of Jim's Bing Crosbystyle vocals and six Chet instrumentals.
It made sense, since Jim was one of Chet's
most important early role models.
For reasons never made clear, only a
handful of the albums were ever pressed,
and a surviving copy brought $8,100 in
a 2013 auction. RCA later haphazardly
mixed five of the vocals with other Chet
instrumentals for a 1963 budget LP. Now,
Sundazed Music has released the original
album intact. The results are stunning.
Chet framed Jim's crooning with his typical of taste and fiery inventiveness. "Asleep
In The Deep" and Webb Pierce's country
hit "Even Tho" became swingers. "I'll Be
With You In Apple Blossom Time" was
recast as a honky-tonk shuffle. Gorgeous
harmonics introduced Jim's vocal on "Out
Of Nowhere." Chet's instrumentals, played
on his Echosonic amp, included "I Know
That You Know" and "Country Style."
Why RCA ever scrapped the project
is lost to history, but after 58 years, this
amazing collaboration can be heard as
Chet originally intended it. - Rich Kienzle
