THREE FACES OF ANA

B

elgrade's Ana
Popovic has been
barnstorming the
globe for years, entertaining audiences with her
own brand of blues-rock,
while gathering a loyal fan
base. She knows where
her bread is buttered, and
it's the fans that benefit.
Trilogy is an album that
showcases her blues,
jazz, funk, and R&B
influences. An ambitious
effort, this is a one-stopshop to hear all things
Popovic. She's hired
separate teams of producers and musicians to fulfill
the stylistic tone of each
set, and adjusts her performances accordingly.
Twenty-three tunes
produced by Grammy
Award winner Tom
Hambridge (Buddy Guy),
Grammy Award winner
Warren Riker (Lauryn
Hill, Carlos Santana), and
composer and trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis
make for a slick record.
Guests include Joe

Bonamassa, Robert
Randolph, and drummers
Bernard Purdie, and
Cody Dickinson (North
Mississippi Allstars). It's
this cast of stellar music
professionals that pushes

Ana Popovic
Trilogy

Popovic's musicianship,
vocals, and artistry to a
whole new dimension.
While her guitar
playing has always been
consistent with a nimblefingered attack, her
singing has become more
soulful with each album.
Her Serbian twang is less
evident, or perhaps it no
longer matters. Trilogy

Little Charlie
and Organ
Grinder Swing
Skronky Tonk

Any fan of the
origina l Litt le
Cha rlie a nd t he
Nightcats knows Charlie Baty can swing;
he always had one foot in the jazz world
while playing the band's brand of blues.
Here, on his first jazz record, you can hear
those chops at full throttle.
The band is an organ trio with Lorenzo
Farrell on organ and J. Hansen on drums.
The track list is full of standards and Baty
originals. And he and the band thoroughly
swing on all of them.
One of the really strong traits of Baty's
playing all the way back to the Nightcats
days is how effortlessly he flies around the
chord changes of songs while remaining
bluesy. That's on full display here on his
"Gerontology" and the classic "How High
the Moon." His ballad strengths are shown
on "Nuages" and "Django."
As you hear Baty navigate the chord
changes in "Pennies From Heaven" with
chords and single lines, it's obvious he's
comfortable in this genre.
In the liner notes he says he has a couple
unreleased jazz records in the can: here's
to the hope that they may see the light of
day. - JH

Pentagram

First Daze Here
First Daze Here Too
If you want to
explore the roots
of metal, check out
Pentagram, an obscure Virginia band
that started recording in 1971. Unlike the technically
prof icient meta l
of Black Sabbath
and Deep Purple,
this foursome had
heavy psychedelia and proto-punk in its
veins, from Blue Cheer to the Stooges.
First Daze Here brings together tracks
such as "Be Forewarned" and "Lazylady"
from '72, both of which display guitarist
Vincent McAllister's blues-based leads
and diabolical riffs, all mixed with leader
Bobby Liebling's raw, garage-band vocals.

Ana Popovic: Cheryl Gorski.

Ana
Popovic
with
trademark
Strat.

shows Popovic reveling
in her own uniqueness,
rather than chasing
untouchable female blues
and soul archetypes.
Disc one was produced
by Warren Riker and
illustrates the depths of
Popovic's funk and R&B
proficiency. She brings
her A game on vocals
and guitar surrounded
by a top-notch rhythm
section and a serious horn
section. Bonamassa is
featured on "Train" along
with Popovic's sultry
vocals. A fret-burning
Octavia solo ensues
that will bring lots of
Bonamassa fans to this
party. A big highlight of
this disc is "Hook Me Up"
featuring sacred-steel
player Robert Randolph.
His solo is brilliantly
soulful and sublime.
Disc two returns to the
comfort zone of bluesrock with Tom Hambridge
in the producer's chair.
Beginning with a nasty
cover of "You've Got
The Love" by Rufus, this
section goes from steamy
minor ballads, a cover
of "Let's Do It Again"
by The Staple Singers,
and the SRV-influenced
"Who's Your Mama."
There's some great wah
playing throughout.
Disc three is the jazzy
stuff with Delfeayo
Marsalis. Popovic lends
her vocals to flawless jazz
backing. She swaps her
Strat for a Gibson ES-175
and performs honest renditions of "In A Sentimental Mood" and "I Don't
Know What Love Is."
Trilogy is a great showcase that will provide just
what the doctor ordered
for fans, while raising the
bar for Popovic artistically. - Oscar Jordan
