TWICE WRIGHT

I enjoyed Michael Wright's piece on
the Guyatone SG-22T (August '17) and
realized that I had seen nearly that
same guitar under another name in a
1968 Aldens department store catalog.
Other than the controls moving to the
opposite shoulder, the Holiday version
looked pretty much the same. This
catalog also featured Holiday-branded
versions of Teisco, Aria, and Harmony
guitars.

BIRDS OUGHTA SING
As a longtime reader, I look forward to each
issue; your reviews and articles are helpful and
informative.
After reading "Treasure in Tennessee" on
the Songbirds Guitar Museum (August '17),
I was saddened by what it implies - iconic
instruments reduced to wall art. These are
musical instruments made to be played. I say
let Joe Bonamassa buy them all! At least we'll
be able to hear them being played - and damn
well. You need a license to drive a vehicle. There
should be a similar law for owning high-end
vintage instruments.
Jon Anderson
Jackson, New Jersey

Songbirds Museum blew my mind. A songbird
sings; Leo Fender, Ted McCarty, Ray Dietrich,
and even ol' Les Paul himself would be rolling
in their graves if they knew their creations
were locked away. Paintings, furniture, coins,
stamps... sure. But guitars were made to be
played, used, and heard. It's a real shame these
guitars, created with forward-thinking design
and made by people who took pride in their
work and skill so they could be played, instead
end up hoarded or hung behind glass.

(Ed. Note: We asked author Rusty Russell to
address these concerns. Here are his thoughts:

"Certainly, Mr. Anderson and
Mr. Dentice raise valid points and their
views are shared by many VG readers. But,
I'd encourage anyone with such concerns to visit
Songbirds, where I think you'll find a carefullycrafted middle ground. In my interview with
COO/curator David Davidson, we discussed
instruments being locked away where no one
can see them, and other common scenarios like
heirs who paint an Esquire because '...it's kinda
chipped up.' Both were motivating factors in
bringing Songbirds to reality. Davidson's passion
is obvious when he speaks about the project and
his efforts to keep these amazing examples of a
different time from being 'hidden away.' He truly
wants everyone to see these wonderful pieces upclose - and in some cases, hold and hear them.
Also, consider what Joe Glaser and Vince Gill
say in the feature; the collection and its presentation gave new perspective to something they've
loved all their lives. Glaser noted the academic
implications. Even Joe Bonamassa was thrilled
during his visit and saw things he didn't know
existed. I urge anyone to see Songbirds before
passing judgement.")

I enjoyed Michael Wright's profile of the
Gibson Marauder (September '17) and thought
I'd add my own experiences. My first solidbody
- a used Marauder - was purchased for $200
in the summer of '77 from the original Guitars
Unlimited in New Haven, Connecticut. It had
a blond finish, white pickguard, and rosewood
fingerboard. While some models had the
rotary pickup selector, mine had a standard
three-way toggle.
Marauders looked cool and, at age 14, I
bought it for the vaguely Les Paul shape and
name "Gibson" on the headstock. Still, it
wasn't much of a guitar - its pickups were
dull and underpowered (especially in the
bridge) and the fingerboard had a low radius
that encouraged fretting-out. That said, I'm
still nostalgic for my old Marauder, which I
sold in 1980 for... you guessed it, 200 bucks.
