that reads "King Of The
Nine-String Guitar."
Because it's true - as is
the rest of the epitaph:
"Big Joe sustained the
longest recording career of any Mississippi
bluesman, spanning
seven decades, from
1929 to '82. He was a
true American original."
As remarkable as the
longevity of Williams,
who was born in 1903,
was his consistency. He
reportedly added the
extra strings (doubling
the D, B, and high
E in unison) so that
nobody else could play
his guitar.
Rockbeat has released
a gem from the archives
of Norman Dayron - a 1963 recording of
Williams performing at Chicago's Fickle
Pickle, which was booked by Dayron's
friend, Mike Bloomfield, when Big Joe was
just shy of 60 years old.
Williams' powerful guitar playing and
singing are clearly evident on his classic
composition "Baby Please Don't Go,"
Roosevelt Sykes' "44 Blues," and John Lee
Williamson's "Sloppy Drunk."
The recording quality is very good, at
least of Big Joe. Bloomfield, Sunnyland Slim,
and Washboard Sam are listed as sidemen,
but are indiscernible. A real find would be
a document of Williams backed by "Little
Mike and Memphis Charlie" - Bloomfield
and Charlie Musselwhite. - Dan Forte

The Replacements.

hear him scorch the fretboard at 150 mph,
just briefly. Conversely, "I Want Love"
starts with soulful double-stops from the
Curtis Mayfield school, just sweet guitar
licks and rich R&B vocals, but drops in
some metallic stoner-rock sections to keep
it edgy. Somehow, it all works perfectly.
"The Climb" fits right into the funky,
stoner-rock vibe, giving JD plenty of room
to howl at the moon with his guitar. His
wild soloing here brings to mind everyone
from Roy Buchanan to Jeff Beck and Jimi
Hendrix, yet remains his own.
In all, this latest is evidence of a deep,
maturing artist and overall monster guitarist. - Pete Prown

The Replacements: Caryn Rose.

Rise and Shine
Blues-rock phenom J.D. Simo and
his band continue
to push boundaries as they explore
everything from slow-burn soul and psychedelia to greasy funk-blues that would
make Albert King smile. This album also
has a nice lo-fi audio, lending to sonic
mystery of the proceedings.
"People Say" rides a low-down groove,
the perfect setting for JD to rip on blues
guitar in his earthy style. Sure, Simo can
blaze, but he usually holds back, never
overplaying or showing off - still, cue past
the three-minute mark of "Meditation" to

Dwight Yoakam
Live From Austin,
TX

On October 23,
1988, Buck Owens
and his biggest fan,
superstar Dwight
Yoakam were taping separate "Austin
City Limits" performances. A year earlier, they'd met in
Bakersfield when Yoakam invited his hero
to join him onstage. Retired from music,
the veteran hitmaker had long hoped the

world would rediscover his twangy legacy.
Master and disciple clicked, and Buck got
his wish. They began gigging together, Buck
fronting a revived Buckaroos. That summer, their duet remake of Buck's obscure
"Streets Of Bakersfield," became his first
#1 single in 16 years.
These two albums, available in vinyl, CD,
or digitally, preserve the history and magic
of that night in their "ACL" performances.
Yoakam accompanies himself aggressively on his Martin as he offers his hit
singles of that era: "Honky Tonk Man,"
"Guitars, Cadillacs," "Little Sister," and
the rest backed by original lead guitarist
Pete Anderson.
Toting a silver-sparkle Telecaster, Buck,
with Terry Christofferson alternating lead
and pedal steel, did the same, providing
energetic versions of hits like "Act Naturally," "Crying Time," "Tiger By The Tail,"
and his obscure '50s rockabilly recording
"Hot Dog," joining Dwight for "Streets"
and "Under Your Spell Again." - RK
