Ted Leo

The Hanged Man
C r it ic a l l y a cclaimed East Coast
s on g w r it e r Te d
Leo's press clippings are filled with
references to the Canon of British Bands
Whose Names Are Collective Nouns: The
Who, The Jam, The Clash. Fair enough;
after all, Leo has made no secret of his
unabashed love of The Only Band That
Matters, for example.
Fans who in the past have found comfort
in Leo's strains of anglophilia will not be
disappointed in this latest - Leo's first
"solo" affair since 2010's The Brutalist
Bricks, recorded with his crack band, the
Pharmacists (a collaboration with Aimee
Mann dropped in 2014).
The 14 tracks here evoke Elvis Costello
("Make Me Feel Loved" and "The Little
Smug Supper"), Paul Weller ("Used To
Believe"), Joe Jackson's blue-eyed soul
("Can't Go Back"), and the Beatles ("The
Nazarene"), among others, not to mention
Leo's punk roots (see "Anthems Of None,"
for example).
But, perhaps inspired by newfound
freedom from label constraints (the album
was crowd-funded and self-released), Leo
pushes into new sonic territory. Bookends
"Moon Out Of Phase" and "Let's Stay On
The Moon" are exercises in PJ Harvey-like
dissonance and Lennon-esque arrangement, while the highlight, "William Weld
In The 21st Century," is a richly layered
and dynamic studio-geek effort that
wouldn't be out of place on a latter-day
Wilco release. - DP

San Francisco
String Trio

May I Introduce to
You
As the title may
tell, here's yet another collection of
Beatles tunes - this one entirely from Sgt.
Pepper - done mostly in the form of jazz
instrumentals. The trio is Mimi Fox on
guitar, Mads Tolling on violin, and Jeff
Denson on double bass (along with vocals
on three tracks), and it soars thanks to
skillful musicianship.
Fox is a world-class jazz guitarist and

supplies tons of support via strong comping, especially on "With A Little Help From
My Friends." Her soloing on "Getting
Better" highlights a nifty arrangement that
jazzes up the original. And her lovely chord
melody work on "She's Leaving Home"
captures the melancholy of the original
lyric without any vocals needed.
Tolling is brilliant throughout. His violin
work is playful, moody, and daring on
songs that could easily be hamstrung by
their familiar melodies. Denson is strong
on the bass, propelling the tunes perfectly
for a string-trio setting.
All three of these players have worked on
great records before, but this band debut
points to many more for the San Francisco
String Trio. - John Heidt

play in the realm of folk, country, blues,
and Americana. A Perfectly Good Guitar is
illustrated with dozens of specially shot
images of the guitars and stars, backed by
stories from players.
Dave Alvin and John Hammond rave
about their Nationals while Marty Stuart,
Bill Frisell, Redd Volkaert, and Bill Kirchen
rhapsodize their Teles and Esquires to the
heavens. Tommy Emmanuel tells of his
Maton acoustic, and Cindy Cashdollar
sings the praises of a particular '40s Gibson
lap steel. Further stories come from the
likes of Waddy Wachtel, G.E. Smith, Jorma
Kaukonen, Rosanne Cash, and more.
Interwoven with Holley's gorgeous images, the text is very personal - love stories
about the romance of a player for a special
instrument . - Michael Dregni

A Perfectly Good Guitar
A good guitar f its
like a well-worn pair
of sneakers. Players often christen them with
names, mods, and wear
and tear that's carried
like a badge of honor.
These two new illustrated books examine
such beloved guitars in
unique fashion.
VG regular Dave Hunter's Ultimate Star
Guitars takes a more-historical tact as he
covers the most famous "star guitars"
used by players from Son House, Django
Reinhardt, and Charlie Christian to Jimi,
Eric, the Edge, and others. Each instruments' story is told along with its repairs,
hot-rodding mods, and battle scars - all
illustrated with hundreds of images of players, guitars, and associated memorabilia
such as album covers, gig posters, and more.
From Clapton alone, there's his Bluesbreakers 'Burst, the ES-335 he played with
Cream, the psychedelic Fool, and, of course,
Blackie. Plus there's SRV's First Wife, Neil
Young's Old Black, B.B. King's Lucille, Billy
F. Gibbons' Pearly Gates, and players of
all ilks - Nels Cline, Steve Cropper, Sister
Rosetta Tharpe, Eddie Cochran, Dimebag
Darrell, and so many more.

suffered an ignominious death in
the '80s, perhaps
deservedly. That didn't stop a few British
bands from pushing onward, notably
Marillion, which found a sweet spot on its
third album, 1985's Misplaced Childhood.
Reissued here as a mega-deluxe box, listeners can enjoy the era in microscopic detail,
including the remastered original album;
two CDs from a superb Dutch concert; a
disc of demos and B sides; and Blu-Ray
disc of 5.1 remixes from the renowned
progmeister Steven Wilson. There's also
a hard-cover booklet, vinyl options, and
hour-long documentary.
For the uninitiated, Marillion lands
between Genesis and Pink Floyd, conjuring cinematic mini-epics such as
"Kayleigh," the '85 hit single that saved
the band's career. Singer Fish gave the
quintet a Peter-Gabriel-styled frontman
coupled the melodic, echo-laden guitar
work of Steve Rothery, who mined David
Gilmour and Steve Hackett but added his
own special f lair.
If you already know Misplaced Childhood, you'll dig the remastered and
Blu-Ray versions, but the concert from
Utrecht, Netherlands is a real treat. The
audio is crisp, with Rothery drawing
forth languid, mournful Strat leads on
"Incubus" and "Chelsea Morning." If you
don't know Marillion, but love classic prog,
this deluxe box set will indoctrinate you
quickly. - PP
