EXTRA
JOE SATRIANI

JOE CARO AND THE MET BAND

Every Dog Has His Day
Caro and friends burn through
unexpected covers of Dylan,
Hendrix, and originals by Caro
with a cocky grace and soul
that shows they mean business.
Caro's playing mixes elements
of jazz, R&B, and rock. He's a
soulful and imaginative player
who zigs when other players
might zag, keeping the tunes
and his playing interesting. - JH

THE NIGHTHAWKS

All You Gotta Do
The venerable ensemble's latest
proves once again that they are one
of America's musical treasures.
Funny and serious lyrics that mix
with roots rock in a way that nobody
else does it. Paul Bell on guitar shines
with blistering slide on "Let's Burn
Down The Cornfield" and some pure
rock playing on "Another Day." And
how can you not love a band that
ends a record with a cover of the
Standells' "Dirty Water"? - JH

DUKE ROBILLARD

And His Dames Of Rhythm
Swing-guitar expert Robillard
recruits a bevy of talented women to accompany him on some of
his favorite tunes from the 1920s
and '30s. He digs deep within
the great American songbook
and gets superb vocal assistance
from Sunny Crownover, Kelley
Hunt, Elizabeth McGovern, Maria
Muldaur, Madeleine Peyroux,
and Catherine Russell. - OJ

PAPER WINGS

DOC WATSON

Live At Purdue University, 3-19-64
With the abundance of material Watson recorded in his 89
years, virtually all of it worth
owning, do we really need another album? In this case - recorded
live the same year his first solo
album was released, shortly after
pivotal appearances in New York
and the Newport Folk Festival
- absolutely. His flatpicking, fingerpicking, banjo and harmonica
playing, and of course baritone
vocals are in peak form. - DF

What Happens Next
Satch joins Red Hot Chili Peppers/Chickenfoot drummer Chad
Smith along with Deep Purple icon
Glenn Hughes on bass for 12 epic
tales of instrumental odysseys.
Fat guitar tones heavy on melody
and feel allow Satriani to soar with
clever ideas and arrangements.
Warm production works alongside
shrewd use of dynamics and flawless virtuosity throughout. - OJ

UFO
ALI HANDAL

That's What She said
Handal is a devilishly witty songwriter whose guitar is as blue and
gutsy as her lyrics. Her smart, adult
pop songs are underscored with authoritative blues licks. Handal's versatility as writer and guitar player are on
display when she trades Stratocaster
for Dobro on "You Get What You Settle
For" to make for some of the album's
brightest, bluesiest moments. - RA

The Salentino Cuts
A full album of classic-rock
covers? Hell, yes! Vinnie Moore
dials back the shred in favor
of soulful blues-rock bends on
"Heartful Of Soul," "Break On
Through," "Mississippi Queen,"
and a kick-ass version of "Too
Rolling Stoned." A nice surprise is
UFO's take on John Mellancamp's
"Paper In Fire" - the band nails it
and original frontman Phil Mogg
is singing better than ever. - PP

Paper Wings
The debut of West Coast duo
Emily Mann and Wilhelmina
Frankzerda achieves a remarkably authentic Appalachian
sound that belies the ladies'
young ages. Self-contained,
employing fiddle, acoustic guitar,
and clawhammer banjo, their
impressive original compositions and vocal harmonies sit
convincingly alongside covers of
Hank Snow and Tommy Jarrell,
as well as Hazel Dickens' "Only
The Lonely." No mean feat. - DF

WHITNEY ROSE

Rule 62
Like her first two albums,
Rose's third was co-produced
by the Mavericks' Raul Malo.
These 11 numbers (Rose wrote
nine) range from ballads and
rockers to Memphis R&B - all
with an eclectic, retro feel.
While Malo handled rhythm
guitar work thoughout, he also
recruited two of Nashville's
best in lead guitarist Kenny
Vaughn and steel guitarist Chris
Scruggs, both members of
Marty Stuart's band. - RK

TOM MCGUINNESS
SUPERSONIC BLUES MACHINE

Californisoul
The band continues to burn with
gritty tunes and inspired performances. Lance Lopez wails magnificently as Kenny Aronoff and Fabrizio
Grossi lay down massive support.
This time, they jam with guests
including Steve Lukather (getting
psychedelic on "Hard Times") Robben
Ford (swinging on "Somebody's
Fool"), Eric Gales (playin' nasty on
"Elevate"), Billy Gibbons, and Walter
Trout. All shine admirably. - OJ

JEFF BECK

Live At The Hollywood Bowl
Beck celebrated 50 years in
the biz and unveiled Loud Hailer
with an incandescent show
at the Bowl in the summer of
'16. Performances celebrated
his longevity with guests
Buddy Guy, Billy Gibbons, Jan
Hammer, Steven Tyler, and
Beth Hart. Highlights include
"Purple Rain," "For Your Love,"
and "Star Cycle." - OJ

VINTAGE GUITAR

Playing For Time
The original bassist with
Manfred Mann, then half of
McGuinness Flint, for nearly 40
years McGuinness has been
the Blues Band's lead guitarist.
These 21 originals are culled from
his two solo albums, with two
teasers slated for 2018. From
the electric bottleneck of "Long
Hard Road" to the minor-key
"Wrong Woman," he displays
the three T's of the blues:
tone, timing, and taste. - DF
