Jeff Beck, Joe Zawinul, Mike Stern, Randy
Brecker, David Sanborn, Pat Metheny,
Betty Wright, Joss Stone, and others. His
book, Exercises In African-American Funk,
inspired him and Stone to record an album
focusing on the Cameroonian rhythms
mangambe and bikutsi.
They enlisted guitarist Nitin Sawhney
(whose credits range from Beck to Imogen
Heap to Anoushka Shankar) and guitarist/
bassist Etienne M'Bappé (Zawinul, John
McLaughlin, Jimmy Herring, Ali Farka
Toure), along with former James Brown
saxophonist Pee Wee Ellis, known more
recently for his work with Van Morrison
and Ginger Baker.
The result is a fascinating collection of
hypnotic grooves and Stone's lyrics, written from the perspective of Mother Earth.
Stone, who can cross the "over-souled"
line at times, reins her vocals in without
sacrificing passion and expressiveness.
She's an equal part of the whole - a swirl
of percussion, horns, chiming guitars, and
lowdown bass.
Solos are kept to a minimum, but five
instrumental "Interludes" are likewise seductive. It's an ambitious undertaking that
succeeds. Don't let the "uncategorizable" or
"world music" tags scare you away; it may
be difficult to play, but it's easy to enjoy - in

Since her days
as bassist and
singer in Trampled
Under Foot with
her brother, Nick
Schnebelen, Nicole has proven a powerful vocalist whose amazing technique is
matched by a wellspring of emotion in each
and every song. That doesn't change here
on her second solo effort with originals
mixing with some well-chosen covers that
show off her considerable talents.
There are plenty of six-string friends
along for the ride too. Kenny Wayne Shepherd's punchy Strat fills and bend-filled
blues solo is the perfect blend with Nicole's

WACKY MAKES GOOD

T

hese two slightly
idiosyncratic books do
justice to the histories
and wares of two highly
idiosyncratic guitar makers - England's Burns and
Australia's Maton.
The Burns book is small
in trim (63/4" x 91/2") and
page count (167) but wideranging and expansive
in content and images.
James Ormston Burns was
a Hawaiian guitar player
who built his own instrument in 1952, and then
translated both his playing
and craftsmanship knowhow into a guitar empire
that flourishes today.
Published by Burns
London itself, the authors
had the run of the archives,
pulling historic images,
brochures, band photos,
EP and LP covers, and
rare product shots from
the files. And they provide
a solid model-by-model
history of guitars, basses,
pickups, and amps.
The photography of the
instruments is stellar -
though collectors might
wish there were more of
them. Still, the imagery will
make your head spin as
you try to wrap your mind
around the crazy shapes
and array of features that's
part of Burns' magic.

The Maton tome
(ABOVE) is massive - 10"
x 13" and 400 pages. While
it's indeed focused on the
author's collection and he
promises it's not the bible,
the book includes more
than 200 instruments. Yet

Les Pauls, Voxs, and even
Rickenbackers, but it's
when Maton designers
let their imaginations run
free that the instruments
truly became unique.
Perhaps the pinnacle
was Maton's '60s Fyrbyrd
series - its name perhaps
borrowing from Gibson,
Gretsch, or both. The
guitars often boasted

all of them get full-page
photography, along with
detail shots. You can't ask
for much better than this.
The earliest flattop and
archtop acoustics here date
back to'46 when Maton
was just starting out. The
author also covers numerous basses and amps.
But as with Burns,
it's with the solidbodies
that Maton hit its wacky
stride. Sure, they made
their share of models
"inspired" by Teles, Strats,

Bigsby tailpieces, Bigsbyinspired pickups, and more
switches and dials than
even a Jazzmaster - plus
even what appears to be
a miniature stickshift! And
then there's the lyre-shaped
El Toro line that make
Danelectros appear tame.
Or the Flying V-like Flaming
Arrow - that's an acoustic
guitar. Amazing stuff.
Both of these books are
solid references for collectors as well as dreambooks
