HIT LIST REVIEWS
Stan Martin

Long Nights

Yo u ' d t h i n k
guitar man Kenny
Vaughan had been
playing with this
combo for years.
He has musical history with the rhythm
section of drummer Dave Roe and bassist
Jerry Roe. But it's a first-time matchup
for Vaughan and singer/songwriter and
fellow Telecaster enthusiast Stan Martin.
Nashville studio veteran Dave Roe's
idea to bring them together was right
on time. Their mutual respect and the
creative spark they ignite in each other as
guitar players is easily heard on an album
that is a candy store for Tele nuts. They'll
f lip over the faux steel guitar on the title
cut and fat, juicy rolls laid out on "What
Made You Think." The way the two get
up to things on "All Mine," you'd think
it was a Fender demo.
Most important, all that great picking
is done in service to some of Martin's best
songs to date. "Dos Tequilas" is a Tex-Mex
number that's perfect for drinking, dancing, or crying in your beer. "My Dream"
is a splendid pas-de-deux between the
guitarists, an Orbison-worthy ballad sung
beautifully by Martin.
Martin's country music is the genuine
article with twang to spare and this album
confirms his place in the big leagues as a
genuine triple threat. - Rick Allen

Toto

40 Trips Around
the Sun
Toto is one of
those love 'em or
hate 'em bands -
you're a fan of their
intricate pop-rock, or not. Just out, this
solid greatest hits package is spiced with
three new tracks, all of them good.
Kicking things off is "Alone," offering
jazz-approved chord clusters and a radioready chorus. Naturally, space is provided
for Steve Lukather to step forward with
one of his soaring, whammy-tinged solos.
Next is "Spanish Sea," a cut started in
1986 with drummer Jeff Porcaro and
bassist Mike Porcaro, both of whom have
since passed away. Its verse is breezy yacht
rock, but shifts to a wicked, heavy guitar
groove. "Struck By Lightning" is a full-on
cruncher with another blazing Luke lead.

Barney Kessel
Live at the
Jazz Mill.

STOMPIN'

A

year after Barney
Kessel began recording his now-landmark
material for Contemporary
Records, he performed
at Phoenix's Jazz Mill
backed by the house
band, the Jazz Millers.
The event was captured
on a portable tape
recorder by young audiophile Jack Miller in clear,
well-balanced monaural.
This seven-song continuation, like 2017's Volume
1, comes from Miller's
tapes.
Playing his modified
Gibson L-7, Kessel wasn't
working with minorleaguers. Leading the
band was pianist Pete
Jolly, later a major voice
in both the L.A. jazz and
recording scene. Miller,
too, became a respected
Hollywood audio engineer.
Kessel's inventiveness
and fire are on full display
for "Mean To Me," which
starts with a masterful
flourish of chords. He
states the melody in
unison with Jolly before
embarking on a masterful
improvisation supported
by bassist Gene Stoffell
and drummer Art Kile.

on "Tea For Two" before
Kessel spins off some
breathtaking solo lines.
"Indian Summer" also

Dick Garcia

A Message From Garcia
flair. On "Let's Fall In
Love," Kessel and Jolly
again play unison before
their respective solos.
Eschewing the usual
ballad treatment, "Blue
Moon" gets a bracing,

medium tempo arrangement. On "I Can't Get
Started" guitar and
piano probe the song's
melodic melancholy.
George Wallington's
bebop favorite "Godchild"
allows Kessel to finish in
a comfortable groove.
A largely self-taught
virtuoso firmly rooted in
bebop, Dick Garcia gained
visibility during his 1952
stint with pianist George
Shearing's popular quintet. In '56, he won Down
Beat's critics' poll in the
guitar category and recording this, his only solo
LP (reissued on vinyl).
Working with three distinct instrumental lineups,
Garcia demonstrates his
decidedly cool prowess
on seven standards and
three originals. Clarinet,
bass and drums surround him on "I Don't
Want To Set The World
On Fire," "Have You Met
Miss Jones," and the
original "Potatoes."
With a piano trio,
Garcia explores the
witty original "Kimona My
House," "Like Someone
In Love," and "Ev'ry Night
About This Time." The
pianist on these tracks,
described in the notes as
"a recent addition to the
New York jazz scene,"
is Bill Evans, soon to
become one of the greatest of all piano voices.
The third combination
surrounds Garcia with
a rhythm section and
alto saxophonist Gene
Quill, tackles four tunes:
Garcia's "The Deacon,"
"If I'm Lucky," "It Could
Happen To You," and
"Stompin' At The Savoy."
He would appear on other
recordings, but this was
Garcia's definitive artistic
statement. - Rich Kienzle
