The Danish capital's affinity for clean lines and minimalist interiors makes trips
here a pilgrimage of sorts for fans of contemporary design. With its established
street-style scene and well-regarded reputation as a pioneer of inventive
Nordic cuisine, Copenhagen lures cruisers in the mood for vibrant modernity.

9 am Grab breakfast at Torvehallerne
(Frederiksborggade 21), a pair of
expansive, greenhouse-like food halls in central
Copenhagen, a 20-minute cab ride from the
port. "Two of my favorite finds - The Coffee
Collective and Lauras Bakery - sit across
from each other inside," says Rod Lundgren, a
Virtuoso travel advisor. "Pair a smooth and
fragrant espresso with a light and fluffy
11 am Walk 15 minutes southeast to Hay
(Oestergade 61), a design house with a
thoughtful collection of furnishings and
accessories - the shop's bright, stackable
Kaleido trays, made from powder-coated steel,
are a cult favorite. Around the corner, By
Malene Birger (Antonigade 10) carries a
range of effortless crepe dresses, silk tops,
sweaters, and coats.
1 pm Along Copenhagen Harbour,
culinary entrepreneur Claus Meyer's
mint-green, art deco The Standard (Havnegade 44), is home to three restaurants and a jazz
club. Try a modern version of the smørrebrød -
a classic Danish open-face sandwich - at
Almanak: It's piled high with herring, whipped
crème fraîche, egg yolk, and dill.
2 pm For a crash course in Danish design,
visit the stately Designmuseum
Danmark (Bredgade 68), featuring work by
Finn Juhl, Hans Wegner, and Arne Jacobsen.
Afterward, stop by the museum shop to
browse for souvenirs among the collection of
ceramics, textiles, and jewelry.
5 pm Copenhagen's fondness for
aesthetically pleasing spaces extends
to its neighborhood watering holes. In the
Norrebro district, a ten-minute cab ride
from downtown, microbrewery Mikkeller
& Friends (Stefansgade 35) welcomes
drinkers with 40 beers on tap, white
lacquered picnic tables, and pale-blue walls
for sipping ales in style.
4 pm From modular sofas to salt and
pepper mills, Danish brand Normann
70) is known for its bold take
on contemporary design.
Housed in a former cinema, the
store feels like a gallery, with
armchairs, whiskey glasses, and
