The state is also home to Uxmal — considered one of the most important Mayan sites in Mesoamerica — as well as Ek’balam and Oxkintok. Yucatán’s capital, Mérida, is called the “White City” for its many well-preserved, white-front colonial buildings. Founded in 1542, Mérida was established over the ruins of the Mayan city of Ichcaanziho and was built from the stones of its ancient temples.
