Picasso spent some of his formative years in Barcelona and the collection housed here focuses on his early works, offering interesting insight into his artistic development. You’ll find childhood sketches, examples from his Pink and Blue periods, his painting Harlequin, and his intriguing series of Cubist variations on 17th-century Spanish painter Diego Velázquez’s Las Meninas. The museum also plays host to ambitious temporary exhibitions. From November 2008 through March 2009, you can catch Living Objects: Picasso 1907-1933; from June to September, the museum will exhibit the works of Dutch painter Kees van Dongen. The Fundació Joan Miró (Parc de Montjuïc) is the artist’s gift to the city. Located in the beautiful Montjuïc Park and commanding stunning views of Barcelona and the Mediterranean, the museum is one of the city’s most important showcases of Modern art, while the Rationaliststyle building — the brainchild of Josep Lluís Sert and flooded with natural light — is a work of art in itself. Miró’s colorful and coquettish surrealism, in large-format paintings, ceramics, and sculpture, complement the architecture and landscaped gardens. The artist himself is buried on the slopes of the park, which itself merits exploration for the panoramic views and the sense of tranquility it affords. From October 31, 2008, through January 25, 2009, you can view the exhibition American Modern, featuring works by Edward Hopper, John Singer Sargent, and Mark Rothko, among others; from February 20 to May 31, the museum will host Her Memory, in which U.S. artist Kiki Smith reflects on woman’s life cycle and its relation to the creative process. more city of Prodigies on page 48 P 46 Virtuoso insights
