Virtuoso Insights - December 2008 - (Page 50) Sundance Film Festival United States January 15–25, 2009 From its humble beginnings in 1978 as the Utah/US Film Festival, Sundance has emerged as the preeminent showcase for filmmakers outside the mainstream. In the early 1980s, the festival was moved from Salt Lake City to Park City, and management was taken over by the Sundance Institute, the esteemed organization established by Robert Redford to help independent film and theater artists. Named for Redford’s character in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, the Sundance festival has launched the careers of such celebrated directors as Quentin Tarantino (Reservoir Dogs), Robert Rodriguez (El Mariachi), and Paul Thomas Anderson (Boogie Nights). Although Hollywood’s influence has crept into the once verylow-key event, Sundance still remains one of the most laid-back and relaxed of the world’s film festivals (particularly during the first week before the big powerbrokers get into town). In 2008, the crime drama Frozen River, about two desperate single mothers enticed by a life of border smuggling, took the Grand Jury Prize for best dramatic feature. seeing iT: Situated at the foot of Mount Timpanogos and site of the Sundance Institute, the Sundance Resort represents founder Robert Redford’s vision to merge artistic expression with environmental conservation.
