It may span fewer than 50 square miles along British Columbia’s coastline, but Vancouver strikes a big pose in the Pacific Northwest. Few cities its size can match such a mélange of cultures and cuisines, urban sophistication and stunning natural environs — not to mention one of the highest standards of living in the world. The energy is even more palpable as Vancouver prepares to host the 2010 Winter Olympics. Under the theme, “With Glowing Hearts,” the Winter Games will take place here between February 12 and 28, 2010; the 10th Paralympic Winter Games will be held between March 12 and 21. In addition to spectacular new venues for the Games, the city is constructing a light-rail line from the airport, as well as making improvements on the highway to Whistler, where the Alpine and Nordic races will be held. So, how best to enjoy an Olympic-sized vacation in Vancouver? Start by exploring a variety of some 20 neighborhoods, each with its own flavor and flair.
