Virtuoso Traveler - August/September 2018 - 14
Compass | BON VOYAGE
Over the course of his life, the botanist George
Forrest made seven collecting expeditions to the
then-remote Chinese province of Yunnan. The
"Scottish plant hunter" returned to Edinburgh's
Royal Botanic Garden with more than 10,000
species - the largest collection of wild Chinese
plants outside the country - including a vast
array of rare rhododendrons. Guests cruising
northern Europe aboard the 264-passenger Le
Boréal will join renowned horticulturalist and
host of PBS' Victory Garden, Holly Shimizu,
for springtime tours of the garden (including
an on-site lunch with its director), timed to
see its rhodies in bloom. Ponant's nine-day
themed sailing also features pre-cruise visits
to London's Kew Gardens and the Chelsea
Physic Garden, one of the oldest in Great
Britain. Departure: May 14, 2019; from $4,690.
