A city with a rich Roman and medieval past
Located on both sides of the Rhine River, Cologne has a rich Roman and medieval past. Founded by the Roman general
Agrippa in 38 BC, the town developed into one of the most important trade and production centers of the Roman
Empire. Its name dates to the Romans, who reinforced their Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium in AD 50.
Now Germany's largest city touts more than 10 million inhabitants. It's home to University of Cologne, one of Europe's
oldest universities, as well as a cultural hotbed of 30 museums and hundreds of galleries. New shops are opening all over
the city; for stylish finds, head to the Ehrenstrasse, a street overflowing with chic boutiques.
Wander the shops, cafés, and restaurants in the artsy Belgisches Viertel (Belgian Quarter) neighborhood. Take a time-out
from exploring to try the native beer, Kölsch, or wines from the nearby Rheingau, Rheinhessen, or Mosel regions.
