Gateway to Provence
Its reputation as a gritty port town is long gone: Marseille is one of southern France's most exciting destinations, a gateway
to the famous region of Provence. But this isn't the part of Provence with fields of flowers and little villages. Marseille has a
whole new look and feel, especially after being named the European Capital of Culture in 2013. With this honor came major
investment in public spaces and a year of events honoring European culture. The changes have transformed Marseille into a
must-see architectural destination.
Today, you can enjoy fabulous restaurants and cafés, but many visitors are drawn to the stunning buildings all over town,
like the FRAC Marseille contemporary arts center and the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations (MuCEM)
on the waterfront. The spruced-up Old Port promenade features a new events pavilion by Norman Foster, and there is a
new 2,000-seat modern music venue, Le Silo, in the Docks neighborhood.
